Have you heard about service learning? It's an innovative educational approach where students take on classroom projects that make a real difference in their communities. In my book, “Middle School Sleuths,” eighth-graders at Madison Junior High School completely altered the lives of two 86-year-old Holocaust refugees. The students reunited the two best friends 72 years after their long-ago immigration journey. The two unaccompanied minors, who became inseparable on the ship from Nazi Germany to America, lost touch with each other in 1938. Through hard work, compassion, and determination, students helped these best friends find each other again in 2011. The two women were able to resume their friendship, giving each other comfort, love, and support during the last years of their lives. “Middle School Sleuths” not only tells the incredible story of this reunion, but it also showcases the power of service learning projects. By connecting classroom lessons with real-world applications, students learn invaluable life skills, empathy, and the importance of community. Dive into this heartwarming and inspiring story, and see how the actions of young minds can make a world of difference. Perfect for educators, students, and anyone who believes in the transformative potential of education. 📚✨ #ServiceLearning #Holocaust #HolocaustSurvivor #holocausteducation #holocausthistory #middleschool #historyteacher #middleschoolbooks #middleschool #middleschoolteacher #bookrecommendation #bibliophile #bookstagram

Isn't it interesting how schools serve as microcosms of society? The way children navigate relationships, conflicts, and resolution can teach us so much about ourselves. This article discusses the important role that educational environments play in shaping attitudes towards violence and peace. It brings to light personal experiences where schools function as both battlegrounds and safe havens. By fostering empathy and conflict resolution within these spaces, we have the power to change trajectories for students, encouraging a culture rooted in understanding and cooperation. The lesson here is clear: fostering these skills not only aids individual growth but also contributes to building a more peaceful society. How can we, as educators, parents, and community members, create these nurturing environments and amplify these voices in our discussions? Let's start sharing our thoughts and experiences! https://lnkd.in/ehyFKWsK

As we work to improve Jewish education, we don’t have to start from scratch. There’s so much we can borrow and adapt from our public school colleagues to improve our organizations, and in this video ▶️, I share five places to start: 1. Accountability 2. Shared Outcomes Around the Educational Enterprise 3. Supporting Grow-Your-Own Programs 4. Inclusion 5. A Significant and Always Growing Research Base We are so fortunate to have templates for implementing and addressing these issues from our public school colleagues to ensure a future where Jewish education thrives. Watch the video and let me know what you’d add to this list! #Jewisheducation #publicschool #education

Lest We Forget - Passing it on to the next generations... Teaching children about Remembrance Day is important for several reasons: 1. **Historical Awareness** Remembrance Day commemoration helps children understand the historical context of the two World Wars and other conflicts. Learning about these events fosters a broader understanding of history and its impact on society. 2. **Civic Responsibility** Understanding the sacrifices made by soldiers encourages children to appreciate the values of duty, service, and sacrifice. It can instill a sense of pride in their country’s history and promote civic responsibility. 3. **Empathy and Respect** Teaching children about the hardships faced by veterans and civilians during conflicts fosters empathy. Recognising the experiences of those who suffered can help develop respect for diversity in experiences and perspectives. 4. **Critical Thinking** Discussing complex topics like war, peace, and conflict resolution encourages critical thinking. Children can explore difficult questions about justice, morality, and what it means to work toward peace. 5. **Intergenerational Connections** Learning about Remembrance Day often involves stories from family members or community elders who experienced war firsthand. This helps strengthen intergenerational bonds and preserves personal narratives. 6. **Promotion of Peace** By understanding the consequences of war, children can be encouraged to value peace and consider non-violent resolutions to conflicts in their own lives. 7. **National Identity** Engaging with national traditions like Remembrance Day helps instill a sense of identity and belonging within students as they learn about their country’s values and collective memory. 8. **Encouraging Reflection** Remembrance Day provides an opportunity for reflection on contemporary issues related to conflict, such as veterans’ rights, mental health support, and global peace efforts. By teaching children these aspects surrounding Remembrance Day, we can contribute to shaping informed, empathetic future citizens who recognise the importance of remembering history while promoting peace in society today. #lestweforget

🕊️ Happy International Day of Peace! 🕊️ On this International Day of Peace, let’s work together to cultivate a culture of kindness, understanding, and conflict resolution in our schools. Peace begins with small actions that promote empathy and build a sense of community. Here are some activities to foster peace and encourage positive behavior in schools: 🤝 Teach Conflict Resolution Skills: Help students learn how to resolve conflicts through dialogue and understanding. Role-playing exercises can be a great way to practice these skills! 🌍 Promote Acts of Kindness: Encourage students to perform acts of kindness, whether it’s helping a classmate, writing a positive note, or volunteering in the community. 📚 Create Peace Projects: Engage students in peace-themed projects, such as creating peace murals, writing essays on what peace means to them, or organizing a school-wide peace assembly. 💬 Facilitate Open Discussions: Create a safe space for students to express their thoughts and feelings about peace, inclusivity, and mutual respect. Let’s inspire our students to be peacebuilders, today and every day! 🌟 #InternationalDayOfPeace #PeaceInSchools #ActsOfKindness #PsychedServices #learndo

Have you been supporting higher education but getting disappointed in your ROI? Disappointed that the Ivy League college you've been supporting teaches students to hate Jews and demand their genocide. Disappointed that your money is going towards furthering hate instead of spreading light. I understand. You wanted to help propel society forward, but your money has been funding a backward slide. Luckily, there's another option. You can still support higher education. Jewish higher education. Only this time, your money will be spent on spreading light, love, and real moral values. PM me and I'll find you a great Jewish school to support. ______ ATT is Chicago’s central agency for enhancing Jewish education through professional development, courses, funding & advocacy.
