To keep cells from popping like balloons or withering like that plant on your window ledge, they need to balance ions, especially hydrogen and sodium as these are critical regarding cell volume, osmotic balance, and pH 🎯 This delicate task uses an ion channel known as Na+/H+ Exchanger 4 (NHE-4) – it’s part of the SLC9 gene family in case you were wondering. You’ll find NHE making sure stomach cells properly secrete hydrochloric acid, helping kidneys respond to osmotic changes and maintain their structural integrity, and making sure brain cells can detect sodium so your thinking organ gets the right amount of water in. If you want to detect NHE-4 – perhaps alongside another interesting water channel like aquaporin – you can use our Anti-Na+/H+ Exchanger 4 (NHE-4) Antibody (ANX-004). For this Microscopy Monday here’s a very neat IHC section of perfusion-fixed frozen rat brain stained with our Anti-Na+/H+ Exchanger 4 (NHE-4) (plus goat anti-rabbit-AlexaFluor-488) in green, alongside our Guinea Pig Anti-Aquaporin 4 (AQP4) (300-314) Antibody (AQP-014-GP) (plus goat anti-guinea pig-AlexaFluor-594) in red. Nuclei are stained with DAPI in blue as usual. This is a colocalization experiment and you can see how both NHE-4 and AQP4 are expressed in cells of the subfornical organ (SFO).
