Dear Chip Designers, . . . Today, I spoke with a 1-year experienced Analog IC Design engineer. He was assigned a new task: verifying and simulating a data converter. At first, he was hesitant about the simulation work. But after our strategy call, we discovered how he could turn it into a valuable learning experience. Here's the 3-step roadmap to mastering Analog IC Design: 1. Design from Scratch Be the architect of the design: choose the architecture, create schematics, verify, and run post-layout simulations. Own the entire process! 2. Learn from Previous Designs Simulating existing designs can teach you a lot. Understand the thought process behind other engineers' work. Dive deep into each component and its sizing. Ask your lead or manager “Why?” to grasp the concepts better. 3. Porting Work Nearly 50% of analog design involves porting designs across technologies or specs. This is a crucial skill for hitting time-to-market deadlines. Even porting helps you learn new techniques and adapt to different requirements. So, when opportunities knock, don’t hesitate. Embrace them! (2) Design the analog cells/blocks including but not limit to operational amplifier, comparator, band-gap reference, linear regulator, oscillator … etc., and basic I/O cells. (3) Provide the floor-plan, power-plan, and instructions/suggestions including matching, styles and signal separations to the layout engineers and help the work of layout design. (4) Understands the semiconductor physics and is able to communicate with device engineers. 2. Deduce and explore the system level modeling. Have the developing experience and production record with Power Convertor for OLED, LCD Display and Automotive PMIC is better. 3. Verify and debug the circuits, including: (1) Understand DRC/ERC/LVS reports. (2) Design and figure out the test methods in board-level. (3) Re-produce the result in measurement through simulation. (4) Communicate with product/testing engineers on production test. 4. Teamwork, share the knowledge and make document, including: (1) Work as part of the analog IC design team, follow the instruction of project leader and is willing to cooperate with the other team members. (2) Follow the design process, do the design review and make the design report according to the given guideline. (3) Able to work independently and communicate with the other departments, including application, product/testing, technical marketing, layout/CAD, and production control… etc. (4) Share the knowledge and is willing to provide tips, tricks, guideline in circuit design.
