Solidaridad recently participated in the CII AgroTech India - Krishi Bharat 2024 event in Lucknow. Under the theme of  ‘Indo – Dutch collaboration to promote sustainability in the Animal Husbandry and Horticulture Sector', Solidaridad set up a stall to showcase its interventions in the dairy industry (for GHG emission reduction, health testing of animals, and traceability tools), and displayed products from associated FPOs. 🐄 🥛 The stall was visited by dignitaries from the Netherlands government, that partnered with CII for the event. Observed annually on 26th November, National Milk Day commemorates the birth anniversary of "Milkman of India" Dr. Verghese Kurien, celebrated as the "Father of the White Revolution" in India. Born on 26th November 1921, in Kozhikode, Kerala, Dr. Kurien was instrumental in transforming India from a milk-deficient nation to the world's largest producer of milk. This day underscores the transformative impact of India’s dairy sector, a key contributor to nutritional security, rural empowerment, and economic growth. Globally, India is 1st in Milk production with 230.58 million ton per annum and it is 25% of world production of milk followed by USA. In September 2024, Govt. of India launched the White Revolution 2.0 along with ‘Margdarshika’ for the formation and strengthening of 2 lakh new MPACS, Dairy and Fishery Cooperatives, and SoP on 'Cooperation among Cooperatives.' The objective of White Revolution 2.0 is to milk procurement of dairy cooperatives by 50% (from the present 660 lakh litres per day to 1,000 lakh litres) over the next five years by providing market access to dairy farmers in uncovered areas and increasing the share of dairy cooperatives in the organised sector. It would also provide support for National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD) 2.0, a new central sector scheme under the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MFAHD), Govt. of India to assist 1,000 Multipurpose Primary Agricultural Credit Cooperative Societies (MPACSs) at the rate of Rs 40,000 per MPACS. Success of milk revolution was limited to few regions in India. Adulteration of milk and unorganised markets were the norm in the regions where the success was not realised. Samuday by HCLFoundation changed this in Hardoi by playing an active ecosystem development role. Resulting in Rs 7.2 Cr of dividend being given to milk pourours in 23-24, which is over and above profits they make by selling milk through a transparent and beneficially priced channel. This success was result of a partnership with marketing and procurement organisation Banas Dairy aggregating milk under the Amul Brand. In the partnership Samuday created village level collection infrastructure, created backward linkage channels for improved feed, developed animal health services treating more than 50,000 milch animals and extensively training 12000 farmers for clean milk production. But there was a secret sauce which bound everything together. The secret sauce was the community development work done by Samuday, developing physical and social infrastructure and developing basic necessities such as Heath, Education, Water and Sanitation. Which enabled the markets to flourish.

Key Trends: - Adoption of modern dairy farming practices, such as breed improvement and IoT-enabled animal healthcare, is on the rise. - Value-added dairy products like ghee and cheese are gaining popularity, offering farmers avenues for income diversification. - Organized retailing is growing, enhancing supply chain efficiencies and ensuring better returns for dairy farmers. With over 80% of dairy farms being small-scale or marginal, the sector significantly contributes to rural employment and income generation. Government initiatives like the National Animal Disease Control Program and Rashtriya Gokul Mission aim to boost productivity and value addition, setting the stage for sustainable growth. Success stories like Amul and Mother Dairy underscore the sector's potential for development. Moving forward, a focus on strengthening cooperatives, adopting modern techniques, and fostering innovation is vital. Celebrating National Milk Day: Honoring the Legacy of Verghese Kurien and the Future of Dairy in India On this day, let us celebrate Dr. Verghese Kurien, whose vision laid the foundation for India’s dairy revolution. As we observe national Milk Day, it’s essential to reflect on the significant strides India has made in milk production and the vital role of our dairy sector in the economy. With a staggering 230.58 million tonnes of milk produced in 2022-23, India stands as the world’s largest milk producer, contributing 24.64% of global milk production. This remarkable achievement is not just a number; it translates to a per capita availability of 459 grams per day, well above the global average of 322 grams. However, to harness the full potential of this thriving industry, we must focus on developing infrastructure at the grassroots level. Approximately 86% of India’s dairy farmers are smallholders, often with herds of just 1-5 animals. This demographic is crucial to our dairy landscape but faces challenges related to access to quality inputs, technology, and markets. Investing in infrastructure—such as milk collection centers, infrastructure for enhancing input services, processing facilities, cold chain logistics etc. —is imperative. The National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD) aims to enhance the quality and quantity of milk produced by strengthening these infrastructures. Since its inception in 2014, NPDD has approved projects worth over Rs. 3311 crore, significantly improving access for farmers and increasing organized procurement and processing capabilities. Moreover, collective bargaining within dairy value chains can empower smallholders by ensuring fair prices and better market access. As we enhance cooperative structures and producer organisations, we can increase farmers’ returns while fostering a sustainable dairy ecosystem. Addressing health issues like Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) is also critical. FMD affects livestock health and productivity, posing a significant threat to our dairy farmers. By prioritizing disease eradication efforts, we can ensure healthier herds and more robust production levels.
