Dealing with EMT studies (#PSCAD) on a large scale presents challenges due to stricter ISO requirements (such as IEEE 2800, As-built model, and FERC Order 2023 compliance). As the number of interconnection requests continues to rise, planners find themselves increasingly overwhelmed trying to meet reliability assessment targets with limited resources. There is a pressing need for innovations among project developers, utilities, and operators to tackle these obstacles while advancing clean energy objectives. I'm thrilled to announce the publication of our latest research paper, co-authored with Simon Tindemans, in the journal "Electric Power Systems Research". Our paper, titled "Representative days and hours with piecewise linear transitions for power system planning," explores a hybrid multi-area methodology that effectively captures the operational variability of electric demand and wind farms power. This approach is crucial for long-term energy storage and transmission line expansion planning. In this work, we propose an optimization-based representative extraction method to enhance intraday chronology capturing, ensuring higher precision in preserving data chronology and extreme values compared to traditional methods. The method employs a piecewise linear demand and supply representation, which reduces approximation errors and enhances the accuracy of power system planning. Additionally, we use sequentially linked day blocks for better interday chronology capturing. Simon Tindemans also had the chance to kindly present our paper at the Paris 2024 Power Systems Computation Conference conference (#PSCC2024).
