This Veterans Day, we're shining a light on the work of Kerri Rodriguez, PhD, a member of the Fetch Veterinary Advisory Board and one of the authors of a new study, which found that veterans who worked with service dogs experienced significantly lower PTSD symptom severity, increased resilience, reduced anger and greater life satisfaction. “One of the most exciting findings from this study is that after just three months with a service dog, veterans not only reported lower PTSD symptoms, but also showed improvements to their overall well-being,” Dr. Rodriguez said. Excellent finding. Not new, but the more proof of this principle the better. Comparing to several medical detection studies the principle is one to build on and very similar to earlier studies. Early indications, named as the key aspect and the biggest value of the well trained dogs. #medicaldetectiondogs #medicalalertdogs #actdetectiondogs #hotscheluik #advancedcaninetechnologies #scentdetectionacademy #medicaldetectionresearch #scentservicedogs #ericburchell #hotscheluik

Stop saying all Vets have PTSD or worse are crazy. Veterans are not broken (even if some of us feel like we have broken parts). In a conversation locally with some business owners where we were discussing employment struggles and I asked if they have a line to any organizations doing fellowships with transitioning vets (I was about to hit them with some Hiring Our Heroes knowledge) but the table went silent. Their concern- what it would mean to hire someone who possibly is struggling with mental health issues due to service and would fail to adjust to customer service roles. This social worker said “Class is now in session”.... The truth. Some vets struggle with transitioning from a high OPTEMPO, purpose driven, tight knit community, to living individual lives where finding a new purpose and community is harder. Some do struggle with mental health issues brought on by service. But the facts are, MOST are highly functional, successful, hard chargers, who are ready to step in and get shit done. So I asked them, where did they adopt this narrative? They didn’t know. They had just adopted it at some point. What did they know about PTSD? Very little. See my frustration!? What you might not know if you are outside of the military community is that we train and live by the idea “You are only as strong as your weakest link” So for our small community to see many still struggle, and those struggles sugar coated, underplayed or over generalized we take that to heart. We speak loudly from a collective voice so those in the back of the room can hear us; so those looking at their phones or distracted will look up. This means when there is a link in our chain that needs lifted and supported, to be able to live a life worth living we (thanks MC General Order #4) act as a relay and pass on any information to ensure there is not a breakdown! So that link is not left behind. This doesn’t mean we are all struggling, or those that struggle still aren’t capable of doing some awesome shit, nor does it mean that if you do struggle you will always struggle. Yes, our military needs support. Yes many struggle in BIG ways, AND ALSO, the majority do not struggle, settle in just fine, and will be some of your best employees, supervisors, and c-level leaders. All this to say: Hire More Veterans! #hireveterans #veteranemployment #veteransupport #veterancommunity (photo of me a VA rated disabled vet leading in the front of the room not being broken-)
