The Government of Canada is corporatizing our public resources by ending the moratorium on cod. This is NOT good news. It's a simple fact that the inshore fishery does far more for the economic sustainability of our province than do offshore, factory-freezer trawlers. 10,000 owner-operator harvesters and crew members live and work in our province – making a living in the fishery, landing their product here to be processed here, spending their money here, and raising their families here. The call for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reinstate the Northern Cod Stewardship Fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador and reaffirm the 115,000mt commitment to protect the inshore fishery is critical to the future of our province. We’re experiencing a federal blunder of epic proportions that is not only legally questionable, it also flies in the face of the federal Fisheries Act and DFO’s mandate. The offshore lobby is certainly strong and it’s clear Diane Lebouthillier is easily influenced by deep pockets. Good news from DC: Today the Senate passed the EXPLORE Act that could be a boost to struggling rural waterfronts like Money Island. The EXPLORE Act significantly benefits marine recreation by enhancing access to waterways, improving infrastructure like boat ramps, and addressing aquatic invasive species management. It supports recreational boating and fishing by safeguarding water resources and streamlining permits for outfitters and guides. These measures aim to preserve healthy waterways and expand opportunities for marine-based activities. Much of my work over the past three decades has circled around mitigating the effects of mismanagement, corruption, lack of funding, and inability of state and local governments to sustain working waterfronts and recreational resources like our Money Islsnd Marina in rural southern New Jersey.

We believe that every person has a right to clean, safe, abundant water, which is why we are so proud to be one of the inaugural members of the new initiative, "The America the Beautiful Freshwater Challenge." This new partnership to conserve and restore our country's rivers, lakes, streams, and wetlands will support states and other governments and entities, including Tribes, who are advancing their own policies and strategies for conserving our freshwater systems. Our nation's lakes, rivers, streams, estuaries, and wetlands are fundamental to our communities' health, prosperity, and resilience and are held sacred by many Tribal Nations. This new initiative is critically needed now when protections for some of our most important waters are being rolled back. We are grateful to all the partners working to pursue this important new national goal to conserve and restore freshwater resources. https://lnkd.in/eEV8NCva

Great to see what can be accomplished with collaboration
The Coquille Indian Tribe will soon be putting nearly $8 million in federal grant funding to work on salmon recovery and watershed projects. It is the fruits of the partnership forged between the Tribe and the state of Oregon two years ago allowing the Tribe to co-manage their lands. https://lnkd.in/gJQ5C3Wv

The recent federal court decision regarding fishing licenses issued to the Mi’kmaq Coalition (that bought Clearwater) serves as a reminder of the importance of inclusive dialogue between Indigenous Nations and the Crown. This decision found fault with Canada for not consulting with the Inuit of Nunavut/NTI/QIA, highlighting the need for foresight and collaboration in such matters. As more Indigenous Nations engage in major projects, it is also important to extend “Nation-to-Nation” dialogue beyond government interactions to include meaningful engagement with our neighbouring Nations. And I know, it’s not always easy, but it is necessary. In solidarity lies strength: upholding and respecting our rights through collaboration. https://lnkd.in/gSx_tCJC
