Bandcamp was a glimpse into a more equitable and artist focussed music industry. Starting up in 2007 it stuck to its mission of prioritizing artistic merit over commercial viability. Its business model allowed direct-to-fan sales and it enabled growing and independent artists to make the sort of profits they might not have access to through traditional channels. The company was founded around a strong ethical position when it comes to how music should be valued and has become an institution in the indie scene. While their ethos was definitely admirable, Bandcamp always struggled to maintain a profit. In 2022 they were acquired by Epic Games and then late last year the platform was sold to Songtradr. This acquisition has left fans doubting the future of Bandcamp and uncertain of what changes will occur. The balance between the principles of Bandcamp and commercial viability is what we’re working towards achieving. We’re focussed on innovations that will allow the ‘artist-first’ model of Bandcamp to work at scale and be financially viable in the long term.
