After his experience as a speaker at the OFC 2024 Rump Session (please see: https://lnkd.in/e-RP_cMf), the high-level executive from Lightmatter may decide to skip any future opportunities involving a technical audience (please see: https://lnkd.in/e7ZyJaf6). Tough questions were asked including on the viability of the applications targeted by the startup and whether Google Ventures (GV) ever asked the optical networking team at the hyperscaler for its views on the supplier. The answer provided to the second inquiry implied that it was irrelevant because a top technology exec from the hyperscaler had been hired by the supplier. However, that individual mentioned in the response does not appear to have a lot of intimacy with optics and seemed to have only peripheral participation in the design of TPUs at the cloud services provider.

Apple 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 (𝐋)𝐋𝐌 𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐛 The 2nd biggest company in the world (by current market cap) quietly released #OpenELM, an group open-source language models designed to run efficiently on devices like #iPhones and #Macs. 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: - OpenELM consists of eight models with four different parameter sizes (270M, 450M, 1.1B, and 3B), all trained on public datasets - The model family is optimized for on-device use, allowing for AI-powered tasks to be handled without relying on (expensive) cloud servers - OpenELM slightly outperforms comparable open-source models like OLMo despite requiring 2x less training data. - Also open-sourced is CoreNet, the library used to train OpenELM — along with models allowing for ‘efficient inference and fine-tuning on Apple devices.’ Curious what communicate about this during the coming #WWDC.

Google recently announced its Axiom Arm chips at the Cloud Next conference in Las Vegas. These custom-built Arm-based server semiconductors are expected to be released later this year. But what's the big deal? Well, when a company uses its in-house chips to provide cloud computing services, it can reduce cloud service costs as these chips are more power efficient. Consequently, this endeavor aims to make cloud computing more affordable as part of Google's strategic plan. It's true that Google still lags behind other tech giants like Amazon and Microsoft, which collectively keep about 62% of the cloud infrastructure market. However, based on the fact that GOOGL has surged by more than 40% over the past year, analysts remain bullish about the stock, expecting an upside potential of 7.2% at current levels. ⬆ Another strong quarter (3Q) for AMD as the company delivered $6.8B in revenue at 50% gross margins and operating income of $724 million. This equates into EPS of .47 ⬆ Of course datacenter was the big contributor as its still on a tear. $3.5 billion in revenue - representing a 122% YoY increase and 25% sequentially. ▶ This continued accelerated growth tells me EPYC has found its groove in the enterprise and Instinct is continuing to see adoption in the cloud. ▶ Given AMD's recent acquisition of ZT Systems and Silo AI and the work its done around ROCm - I'm curious to see how what kind of inroads the company makes on the very competitive AI front.

AMPERE COMPUTING EXPLORES SALE According to Bloomberg, Ampere Computing, a company specializing in ARM-based server chip design, is considering a potential sale. Ampere has been working with a financial advisor to explore a potential sale, but it is also open to remaining independent. The company, founded in 2017 by CEO and former Intel colleagues, focuses on developing chips tailored for servers based on the Arm architecture. Ampere 2022 IPO filings indicate that Oracle made a $426M investment, but the IPO was not undertaken. Ampere's customers include Google Cloud, Microsoft, Tencent, and ByteDance. Its latest chip, Ampere One, features in-house Arm cores, departing from its initial reliance on Arm's Neoverse blueprints. Notably, multiple cloud providers are developing their Arm-based chips for internal use. In 2021, reports surfaced that SoftBank was considering an investment in Ampere Computing, which would have valued the company at $8 billion. This news indicates potential shifts in the competitive landscape of the cloud market. #AmpereComputing #serverchips #Armarchitecture #RenéeJames #GoogleCloud #Microsoft #Tencent #ByteDance #Arm-basedchips #SoftBank #cloudmarket
