Today is the United Nation's Day of the Older Person. This year's theme is particularly pertinent: "Ageing with Dignity: The Importance of Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons Worldwide." With the number of older people (defined as 65 and over) set to double in Ireland and the world by 2050, this topic will affect each of us in one way or another. As the the first Irish home care company to apply for and be awarded the international quality standard ISO, and a passionate advocate of the need for regulation in our low barrier to entry industry, I firmly believe only those home care businesses that invest in quality, compliance and training will not just survive but thrive. When it comes to care for all ages and ability, private or HSE, demand the best from your home care provider. Our ethos remains unchanged since we started back in 1989, 'we care for others as we would like to be cared for'. You can read more on my thoughts on today's important theme here: https://lnkd.in/edEkCFSK

A Milestone for Aged Care We’re thrilled to share that the Aged Care Act has recently passed, marking a significant step forward for older Australians. This new law ensures the voices of older people are front and centre in the aged care system, delivering much-needed protections and rights Key highlights include: - Independent complaints mechanism, ensuring fairness and accountability. - Enforceable rights, strengthening the dignity and autonomy of older people. - Right to visitors at all times, supporting connection and companionship. - Hardship protections, safeguarding financial well-being. It’s also encouraging to see the Government remove proposed caps on cleaning and gardening services, vital supports many older Australians depend on. Additionally, new measures ensure transparency in care delivery, with full wait times for services and clear complaint resolution timeframes to be published. Finally, parliament has secured the 2% accommodation retention rate, ensuring any future changes must be approved through parliamentary processes. At St Simeon Healthcare, we’re committed to helping you navigate these changes. Contact us anytime for guidance or support—we’re here to help! Great piece of work 👇 Thanks Sara McCunnie for sharing. Big congrats to the team that put this together. 👏 Published this year I love that it integrates the model of care more comprehensively than the usual design frameworks. For instance, it discusses trauma-informed approaches, which are highly relevant to aged care environments. It brings the perspectives and challenges of staff to the forefront, highlighting the risk-averse approach prevalent in aged care and shines a light on the complex and multiple dilemmas that care practitioners are faced with every day in building that are not fit for purpose. I like that it addresses the fine line between home and institution, emphasising the importance of policies and practices encouraging personal belongings in shared spaces. Essential to create a 'home' I love the use of personas, which brings the content to life. It effectively considers multiple perspectives of stakeholders, and it's fantastic to see staff wellbeing being factored into the design. The detailed guidance on designing for community engagement is particularly commendable. However I would have loved to see more on integration of technologies. A missed opportunity. Or how to better leverage multi-sensory approaches throughout the building. But really useful read making complex topic accessible

Australia’s aged care system is not sustainable. A new approach to funding arrangements is critical to support an aged care system which is sustainable, fair and facilitates greater innovation in the sector. Only a financially sound aged care sector will attract the additional investment required to deliver quality care for older people. The Aged Care Taskforce has been established to advise on funding arrangements to support innovation in the delivery of care, amongst other important aspects. We're looking forward to contributing and taking the aged care system through a realm that is supportive and innovative!

A historic step was made yesterday for Aged Care in Australia with The Aged Care Bill 2024 passing the Senate. The Bill has cleared the Senate with bipartisan support which marks this as a major milestone for elderly australians and the industry. Some of the key takeaways aways include - - Better complaint handling - Registration conditions in the rules - Senate review of the rules - Resident’s right to access their designated person The bill introduces significant reforms, including financial changes for those entering care, while protecting our current residents. The Bill will now move to the House of Representatives, where approval is expected from next week. For those in the industry what are your thoughts? What impact do you think the bill will have on the elderly? https://lnkd.in/gMRs4dgb

Planning for Long-Term Care: A Conversation We Need to Have In many American-Asian families, there’s a strong belief that children will take care of their parents as they age—a value rooted in respect and tradition. However, the reality of caregiving today is more complex. The rising costs of healthcare, longer life expectancies, and increasing personal responsibilities mean that relying solely on family members for long-term care may not always be feasible. That’s where long-term care planning comes in. By planning ahead, families can ensure that their loved ones receive the necessary care without placing a significant financial and emotional burden on the next generation. Long-term care solutions offer flexibility and support—whether it’s home care, assisted living, or nursing care—allowing family members to focus on spending meaningful time together. It’s time to start thinking about long-term care not as a substitute for family care, but as a way to protect our families and honor our cultural values in today’s world. Let’s be proactive about our future and ensure that our loved ones are cared for with dignity and respect. #LongTermCare #FinancialPlanning #FuturePlanning

#SupportAtHome from 2025 There will be subsidiary legislation coming, once the #newAgedCareAct structures are in place. The details are what we need to know. What is in, what is out, pre election budget attention to funding and staffing issues and the actual availability of service provision. There will be a further two years until 2027 for a fully integrated care and service structure to be in place, merging current CHSP and HCP programs. We dare to dream that what #GedKearney is describing will happen over time. It has to be more than aspiration. The first steps are being taken. #LetsChangeAgedCareTogether #CouncilOfEldersAgedCare

As a nurse, I’ve always believed that everyone deserves the best care, especially as they grow older. That’s why I’m excited about the transformative changes Labor is making to how we fund and deliver aged care. Australians are living longer, healthier lives, which is something to celebrate. But it also means more of us will need support in the years ahead. Our new Support at Home program, launching on 1 July 2025, will benefit up to 1.4 million older Australians. It’s all about giving people more choices in the kind of care they receive and helping them stay independent at home for longer. These historic reforms will improve the quality, funding, and safety of aged care, ensuring our elderly are protected from harm. We’re also improving residential care to make sure our loved ones have access to higher-quality, more reliable services in their communities. Australians built this country, and they deserve dignity, respect, and the very best care as they age. With these changes, we’re delivering that—helping them live with the support they need and the independence they deserve.
