This material sample board reflects the early design investigations for our upcoming residential project in the East Sussex countryside. Drawing directly from the natural elements present on site, the palette is influenced by local materials and textures. The photograph included highlights part of the site, where a stagnant lake is planned for restoration and expansion, creating a better and more visually appealing relationship between the building and the landscape. Oak trees are prevalent in the area, and their branches, leaves, and fallen bark have informed our approach to material selection. A key focus of this project is the exploration of shou sugi ban cladding, a technique of charring wood to increase durability and texture. Looking to start your own custom build? Take a look at a recent self-build designed by Studio Homer. The design here was led by the topography of the valley site. Previous applications on the site for multiple units of a traditional form have been refused for creating an overbearing impact when viewed from the roadside or neighbouring properties. Due to the slope of the site, building heights in previous applications had been exaggerated. Locating the building parallel to land contours, proposing a split level to the bungalow, and sinking the building into the land greatly reduced the visual massing of the building. The use of biophilic materials further aims to blend the building into the woodland valley. A living roof over stepped levels blends the building into the sloping grasslands while Timber cladding on the exterior walls responds to the woodlands that form the boundary of the site.
