Happy to share another proud moment, my amazing master’s student Ho Jin Choi not only successfully defended his thesis but was also selected as the winner for the Outstanding Master’s Research award in MEAM from Penn Engineering!!! During his research in my lab Ho Jin Choi worked on a variety of projects at the intersection of computational geometry, perception, intent estimation and control for interactive robots. In honor of National Robotics Week, we’re highlighting some of Yale Engineering’s roboticists driving our new initiative known as Robotics for Humanity. As the field of robotics is poised to make an impact on modern life as pervasive and revolutionary as computers did a few decades ago, Yale Engineering is working to help integrate them seamlessly and beneficially into the home, the workplace, in healthcare and other aspects of our lives. Today we feature Marynel Vázquez and her work to deploy robots in group settings: As more robots begin sharing our spaces, the more important it is that we get along with them. That’s where Marynel Vázquez comes in. The assistant professor of computer science specializes in Human-Robot Interaction. One example of her work can be seen with Shutter, a robot designed in her lab that interacts with passersby and offers to take a photo as a memory of their time on campus. The researchers track when passersby choose to interact with Shutter, and how they behave toward the robot. It’s one of the projects designed to help robots understand the many different social settings they could find themselves in. With an interdisciplinary approach that combines computer science (especially artificial intelligence), behavioral science, and design, Vázquez is helping robots make sense of their surroundings and how to respond appropriately. That means a lot of her studies involve social group settings. One-on-one encounters tend to get more attention in the robotics field, but Vázquez notes that multiple-party situations happen everywhere — on campus, in homes, and in workplaces. “Chances are the robots are going to see these multiparty encounters over and over again the more they are deployed in unstructured environments, doing things for people in the future,” she said. “So it’s not just enough for the robots to work and function. Today we feature Brian Scassellati and his work of using robots to measure social engagement and development: Human behavior has been studied from many perspectives and at many scales. Psychology, sociology, anthropology, and neuroscience each use different methodologies, scope, and evaluation criteria to understand aspects of human behavior. Brian Scassellati uses computer science, and robotics in particular, to provide a complementary perspective on the study of human behavior. His research focuses on building embodied computational models of human social behavior, especially the developmental progression of early social skills. “Social engagement is critical to functional intelligence,” said Scassellati. His work uses computational modeling and socially interactive robots to explore questions about social development. To do so, his research team takes on the considerable challenges in building interactive robots. As robots move out of controlled settings and into the settings of everyday life, there is a critical need to engage untrained users in ways that are comfortable and natural. Scassellati and his team are providing a structured approach to constructing robotic systems that elicit and respond to the natural behaviors of people. “Even though they have a serious amount of engineering and computational effort behind them, these robots have real impacts on real people in the real world — in schools, in hospitals, in malls, and on the streets,” Scassellati said. [Call for Workshops and Tutorials] 📜 🤖 🌷 We invite proposals for full and half-day workshops and tutorials to take place in conjunction with the “Robotics: Science and Systems” (RSS) 2024 conference. Proposals should be submitted by 𝐅𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟏𝟔, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒, 𝟐𝟑:𝟓𝟗 𝐀𝐎𝐄 (see our website for submission details). The conference, including its workshops and tutorials, is planned as an in-person event. The #RSS2024 workshops and tutorials provide high-quality, topically-focused forums for researchers at the forefront of robotics. They will take place at the Technical University of Delft #TUDelft in Delft, Netherlands, on 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟏𝟓 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐫𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟏𝟗, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒. Workshops are intended to supplement the research presented in the main proceedings. Tutorials should support researchers new to the field in quickly gaining the necessary skills and knowledge. We are encouraging events that will promote discussion and interaction among the participants. We will prioritize proposals with high educational value, interest and relevance. Specifically, we welcome: - Proposals with a diverse set of confirmed speakers as well as with a plan for active participation of the audience (e.g., submissions for posters/presentations, discussion sessions, interactive hands-on tutorials, etc.). - We encourage organizers to consider, among others, diversity of presenters in terms of: i) Seniority and academic rank (beyond senior researchers, you could invite senior PhD students and postdocs whose work you appreciate), ii) Gender, iii) Race and ethnicity, iv) Geographic location, v) Professional backgrounds (e.g., industry, government, and academia). - Innovative event structures that will encourage discussion and interaction among the participants. Previous examples include structured debates or groupings of senior and junior researchers for brainstorming new research directions. - Proposals that will encourage the participation of communities that have not traditionally participated at RSS but are relevant to robotics science and systems, or the practice and philosophy of the discipline. - Tutorials focusing on tools commonly used in work presented at RSS or showcasing new libraries, which the community can leverage. - Workshops that will encourage analysis and reflection on topics and issues, which formulate challenging problems and that promote discussion, debates, and long-term vision. This includes workshops on ideas that may be important for the field but may be poorly treated by the formal peer-review process. Workshop proposers should indicate to invited speakers that they should not accept to participate in more than 2 workshops or tutorials.
