The 929 Challenge derives its name from the participation of competitors hailing from 9 cities in China's Greater Bay Area, 2 Special Administrative Regions, and 9 Portuguese-speaking countries. The dual purpose of this event is to serve as a bridge between China and the Portuguese-speaking nations, while also attracting projects that promote sustainability. Further details regarding the competition, including the finalist startups, judging panel, and awards, will be announced at the press conference scheduled for June 7th at 3:30 PM at Forum Macau (Platform for Cooperation Service Complex between China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries, Multi-Function Room, 3rd Floor, Avenida da Amizade). The session took place at Edifício Transparente, where the Municipality of #Porto and #StartupPortugal signed an agreement to host the international event in Porto for the next three years. The first speakers for 2025 are already confirmed. The Councilor for Economy, Employment, and Entrepreneurship, Ricardo Valente, representing the Municipality of Porto (Câmara Municipal do Porto), and Startup Portugal signed a protocol establishing the SIM Conference – an event that brings together startups, investors, and leaders of the entrepreneurial ecosystem – in the city for the next three years (2025, 2026, and 2027). The goal is to continue promoting the community of #entrepreneurs and #investors, both national and international, with an interest in Portugal, creating opportunities for #networking, #investment, #promotion, and #learning. Great to be back at PIER71™ for the Maritime Innovation Leaders firechat together with Shaun Hon of Motionventures to discuss open innovation in the maritime cluster in a session moderated by Calvin Chu Yee Ming of Eden Strategy Institute. This was followed by Nakul Malhotra’s sharing of Wilhelmsen’s own experience of how its corporate vc evolved to include open innovation & emerging tech. When MPA first formed PIER71 six years ago with co-partners NUS Enterprise, the idea was to catalyse maritime innovation in Singapore in areas as digitalisation, automation, sustainability and now decarbonisation. It was one of several ways to ensure Singapore remains a relevant global hub port & international maritime cluster. And fun fact: while PIER71 literally means PIER, it is actually the acroymn for Port Innovation Ecosystem Reimagined at Block 71. So “ecosystem” has always been an integral part of the effort. We always knew we couldn’t do this alone. So I’m glad to see the ecosystem has become more vibrant and diverse, with more players coming to Singapore & at an exciting time where we are seeing more funds and deal flow through the Lion City. It remains for all stakeholders here to find ways to build even larger “ecosystems of ecosystems” as we move forward. SGTraDex is one good example of Singapore building neutral, trusted and reliable platforms to foster greater data sharing to encourage greater collaboration. We can replicate this approach in other areas… The urgency to build more resilient, secure & sustainable supply chains remains stronger than ever, given the increasingly disruptive world we live in. In the interest of spurring the Philippines' global startup ecosystem, the National Development Company’s General Manager, Anton Mauricio, discussed the upcoming launch of the first Philippine Innovation Hub with H.E. Constance See, the Ambassador of Singapore to the Philippines. As the fund manager of the country’s Startup Venture Fund (SVF), NDC aims to support Philippine startups by using overseas ecosystems as platforms to scale globally through expanded consumer markets. This can be done by networking with international investors, partners, and other startups, and getting assistance in setting up overseas offices and potential subsidized acceleration. This initiative will encourage local innovative startup growth that will positively impact the Philippine economy. IPS has pitched online on Thursday, May 23, 2024, as part of the competition for KGAP+ (Keihanna Global Acceleration Program Plus). As one of the 12 companies selected to pitch, we are excited to showcase our project and connect with potential partners in Japan. National Research Council Canada / Conseil national de recherches Canada The NRC Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP) and its Japanese partner, Keihanna Science City, have reviewed IPS' application to the Keihanna Global Acceleration Program Plus (KGAP+). IPS was selected to advance to the next stage of the KGAP+. This is a testament to our team's hard work and innovative approach to technology. Keihanna Science City, officially known as Kansai Science City, represents a beacon of innovation and collaboration. Nestled in the verdant hills of the Keihanna region, spanning Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara prefectures, this city is a national project akin to Tsukuba Science City in Eastern Japan. It will be the KGAP+, launched in 2019, is a prestigious program that fosters open innovation and supports startups worldwide to collaborate with organizations in Japan. With a success rate of 83% in helping international companies find large Japanese partners to establish partnerships or Proof of Concept (PoC), KGAP+ is an incredible opportunity for us to expand our reach and impact. Last year KGAP+ has engaged 15 startups from 9 countries across 7 sectors, facilitating successful matches for 67% of participating startups.
