It's a frustrating reality, and AIDAVA is addressing this issue: we aim to craft a digital solution that harmonizes AI technologies to streamline the curation and dissemination of personal health data, furnishing interoperable and reusable health records. It will benefit you as a patient, doctor, healthcare provider, and - as a significant added value - even as a clinical researcher. The workshop in Vienna facilitated collaboration and refinement in three key areas, including data quality checks within SHACL rules, dissecting Human-In-The-Loop patterns, and orchestrating mappings for the Personal Health Knowledge Graph. Participants engaged in discussions centered around enhancing data checks, delineating inputs and outputs for patterns, and optimizing the integration of annotated data into the knowledge graph. The science that happens in renowned universities, shiny futuristic labs and well-funded research programmes is just one piece of the puzzle. For me, the most compelling part is how it integrates into people’s lives—as individuals, as communities, and within society as a whole. Why? Because even the most promising solution or innovation won't go far if it doesn’t align with what people see as useful, acceptable, or easy to use. If these kinds of innovations do make it, they just make life more complex or challenging—which is the opposite of what we need. Take electronic health record (EHR) systems as an example. They aimed to streamline patient data, but without considering the reality of clinical work, they just ended up increasing the burden and reducing face-to-face time with patients. They even contributed to burnout and reduced job satisfaction among doctors. So, when I had the opportunity to work with a global healthcare leader on researching the impact of AI on family medicine and community healthcare, I jumped at the chance. We just wrapped up our collaboration on a keynote for them to deliver at an international meeting this month. This type of work continually reminds me of the fascinating interface between science and society, between theory and real life, which is exactly where I want to be.
