Today is the official World Water Loss Day. What a bleak day to have marked on the calendar. It's a day to commiserate the fact that around 30% of the world's water supply is lost daily, sometimes even more. International Water Association estimates that 346,000,000,000 litres per day are lost. The world should be shocked. It's simply not good enough. Oil wells can cause harm long after they stop pumping. Abandoned wells can leak methane and other pollutants, contaminating the surrounding water, soil, and air. Using the NERSC user facility, Berkeley Lab researchers trained an AI program to identify well symbols on maps.
