TEMU’S NUCLEAR OPTION
I am thoroughly enjoying watching the growth of Temu. I was one of the first consultants and analysts in the U.S. to start writing about Temu, and their business model. When I first mentioned Temu in posts and articles, I stated that Temu had “exceptional potential for growth even against Amazon.” Most people responded with comments like the following:
“Temu will never be able to beat Amazon.”
I never stated that Temu will beat Amazon. However, I did state the following in 2022:
“Amazon may not realize it but they have a legitimate predator and its name is Temu. Temu is a Chinese company that I believe has one goal - copy what Amazon is doing and then strangle Amazon using its own business model. Do not underestimate Temu, Amazon.”
I refer to Temu as “Amazon’s predator” because Temu isn’t afraid of Amazon. For example, Temu is actively recruiting Amazon sellers. Sellers say one of the biggest reasons why they are attracted to Temu’s platform is that it doesn’t charge them fulfillment fees or advertising charges like Amazon does.
Temu requires sellers to store products in U.S. warehouses and handle delivery. This ensures faster delivery - just like Amazon.
I have stated since 2013 that the way to be successful on e-commerce is by using the following strategy:
“Sell everywhere. Deliver anywhere. Deliver to people, not just to places.”
This means sellers should sell their products on Temu, Amazon, Walmart, Kroger, etc. Sell the products everywhere to maximize sales.
However, in the case of Temu, I believe they have a “nuclear option” they can use to grow their sales faster, and expand into additional categories like groceries. How? Acquire Dollar General or establish a strategic partnership. There are nearly 20,000 Dollar General stores in the USA. A combined Dollar General and Temu offers exceptional possibilities for sellers, brands and even their own private label products. Dollar General’s CEO Todd Vasos should contact Temu and discuss an acquisition. A discussion with BroadRange Logistics is also advised ASAP.
In addition, Vasos should contact Mark Edwards, the CEO and Founder of 345 Global, and discuss a partnership. (I encourage all retailers to contact Mark Edwards.)
Amazon has an advantage over Temu when it comes to logistics but it’s not an insurmountable advantage. Temu is making wise moves to strengthen their logistics capabilities. I strongly encourage Temu and Sellers on Temu to contact Ari Milstein, the CEO of BroadRange.
When Amazon was launched, retail CEOs laughed and dismissed Amazon as a potential threat. I strongly advise no one to laugh at Temu - especially grocery retailers. My sources at Temu have told me they’re going to expand into groceries which will pressure many different retailers.
I also believe that if TikTok is banned, Temu will release a similar app.
Temu is a predator and they’re on the prowl.
