I can’t wait until Thursday. Why? Because it’s the annual Australian Women's Golf Network - Special Events Wine and Cheese networking event being held at the James Makin Gallery in Collingwood. I already know many of the attendees, a few of whom I haven’t seen in years. But even more excitingly, I’m really looking forward to making new connections.
Since the very beginning of my career, networking has been so important. In the bustling world of politics (and before social media), networking was the only way to make vital connections with the media and fellow Ministerial colleagues. These connections were formed over twenty years ago, and I still hold many of them close to this very day.
Advancements in technology have dramatically transformed the traditional networking model. Digital platforms like LinkedIn, virtual conferences, and professional social networks have expanded our ability to connect beyond geographical boundaries. We can now participate in global discussions, join specialized groups, and attend webinars without leaving our homes. These tools have made it easier to maintain and strengthen our professional relationships.
Networking is not just about exchanging business cards; it’s about creating meaningful relationships that can lead to new opportunities for career and personal growth. Whether it’s finding a mentor, discovering job opportunities, or gaining insights into industry trends, effective networking can be a game-changer.
Based on my experience the following are some actionable tips for leveraging networking events and platforms:
⭐ Be Prepared: Research the attendees and speakers beforehand. Have your elevator pitch ready.
⭐ Engage Actively: Don’t just attend; participate. Ask questions, share insights, and connect with others.
⭐ Follow Up: After the event, follow up with the people you met. A quick LinkedIn message or email can solidify the connection.
⭐ Leverage Social Media: Use platforms like LinkedIn to continue the conversation. Share your experiences and insights from the event.
⭐ Attend Regularly: Make networking a regular part of your professional routine. Consistency is key to building lasting relationships.
For those keen to action some of these strategies, please consider joining us at the AWGN Annual Wine & Cheese night.
