We were honored to join JEVS Human Services Orleans Technical College in celebrating their 50th anniversary with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for their newly renovated campus! Funded by Pennsylvania’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP), these renovations were thoughtfully designed to foster connections, cultivate a sense of belonging, and empower staff as they prepare the next generation of skilled workers. Orleans Technical College's mission—to equip individuals for the workforce while strengthening families and communities—aligns deeply with our commitment to uplifting the communities we serve. This project embodies the dedication and impact of Orleans Tech’s work and showcases the transformative power of strong partnerships. A special thank you to Ramune Bartuskaite, AIA, LEED GA, WELL AP for delivering opening remarks on our behalf, and our incredible collaborators and construction partner, INTECH Construction, for bringing this vision to life. Here’s to another 50 years of transforming lives and building stronger communities!

This week I'm getting back into the swing of "normal" following a two week project with the University of Minnesota, Technology Commercialization team. There'll be more to share about the project in due course. Suffice to say, for now, it was one of the *best* things I've done work wise. Ever. It's difficult to state how welcoming everybody was. They were generous with time, opinion and candour, all of which made the project so much more enjoyable. The hospitality was just as warm with people so willing to share their time and knowledge of the Twin Cities. I really liked the twin cities of Minnesota and St Paul. There's a healthy busyness to it all without the frantic feel that some cities have. There's lots of public spaces next to water, be that the mighty Mississippi river or the (literally) thousands of lakes. The Mill City Museum was a great way to discover a bit of the modern history of the city and its key role in agriculture. As is so often the case when working with colleagues at other universities, the following reflections come to the fore: ◾ we're doing a lot of things well. Knowing our own workplaces "warts and all" means we often forget to see the good things going on. ◾ getting square pegs into square holes and round pegs into round holes makes things a lot easier. ◾ the things that might be fiddly where you work are almost certainly the same things others find fiddly. ◾ you can't put a price on a positive, ambitious workplace culture. ◾ by and large, university campuses are special places, steeped with history, innovation, public art, fun and beauty. More about the work in due course but I'll finish today by wondering if I can class myself as a honorary golden gopher? I think the only way to answer that is by saying, "Ski-U-Mah!"

Appreciated being interviewed for Higher Ed AV by Thomas Doe Jr. on the topic of space planning within higher ed. Link below. We discussed topics such as: 💔 Why space planning on campus often happens in a disconnected way, resulting in wasted resources and the failure to leverage space effectively to support institutional goals. 🤝 How to use space to drive equity and inclusion, including some specific project ideas. 👎 Why the push to wind down DEI efforts on campus just makes no sense. 👩🏫 My work with the Faculty Approachability Project and how it informs the campus master planning work I do with Co|Here Campus and Workplace. I also love to mention the people I get ideas from and collaborate with, in this case Nancy Sturm, Shannon Dowling, AIA, Stacey Blackwell, and Tracey Birdwell, PhD. #planning #highered #teaching #DEI HETMA

🏢 🏗️ On September 3rd, C40-Cities had the honour of hosting a session as part of the US Green Building Council’s Market Insight Summit Series. The session focused on the critical need to equitably develop the workforce in the building sector and highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in doing so. We were pleased to share our latest research pieces on the opportunities for green jobs in the clean construction and energy efficiency sectors. 🌍🏗️ Special thanks to the US Green Building Council for this valuable opportunity! Our session featured an insightful panel including, Tabaris Smith, PhD from Emerald Cities, Linnea Wikström from Builders and Woodworkers International (BWI), Luke Surowiec from the NYC Accelerator, as well as Nikki Joseph (NYC Mayor's Office of Climate and Environmental Justice) and McKinzie Harper McGuire (National League of Cities). We were also privileged to have contributions by C40's Kate Johnson and Korrin Davis. Key takeaways from the session: 1️⃣ Collaboration is essential: The speakers shared local case studies where unions, cities, and private sector partners are working together to strengthen the building sector workforce in a just way. Initiatives discussed included partnerships with small and minority-owned businesses, offering apprenticeship programs with universities, and implementing economic inclusion programs for construction workers. 2️⃣ Improving working conditions is crucial: The speakers emphasized the need to address the existing challenges faced by workers in the construction sector, including safety concerns and precarious working conditions. Tackling these issues and providing upskilling opportunities is critical for creating a more resilient workforce and achieving cities' long-term climate goals.
