Strengthening R&D’s local identity offers a huge opportunity to connect with broader public audiences. 📌👥🔗 CaSE's new report, People and Places: How to put R&D on the map, explores how the R&D sector can use the framing of place to strengthen connections between the R&D system and the public. It draws on insights from CaSE’s landmark Discovery Decade programme, including extensive public opinion research and a set of pilot studies carried out across the UK in 2023-24, and from experts across the R&D sector. We plan to use this work to stimulate new ideas and collaborations with R&D organisations and local actors to carry out more place-based messaging in the coming years. Today, we've published our latest #DiscoveryDecade report, looking at how we can use place as a framing to build stronger connections with public audiences. Our public opinion research shows that people support local R&D, trust local messengers and often express local pride - so how can we, as a sector, build on that to tell better, more resonant and more local stories? We tested one way to approach coalition building in places, convening groups of stakeholders from the R&D community and local governments to develop example campaigns. These pilots demonstrated these organisations' shared interests and common challenges, as well as the benefits of working together to tackle them. The Campaign for Science and Engineering is thinking about how to build on this work and are really keen to hear new ideas for projects and collaborations. Let me know!
