Had a great day with the Sunbury Revitalization team this weekend! A few weeks ago, I ran a training for their team and facilitated a dinner for local businesses.
On Saturday, we built upon that momentum and hosted a community block party to collect the ideas, stories, and dreams of local residents when thinking about the future they want to create for their downtown.
Here’s how we did it.
We leveraged an approach I call the 3P’s: Pause, Possibility, Participation.
We started with music, big colorful flags, and free cookies and popcorn. That was enough to cause people to pause and wonder what was going on. The first step is to always disrupt people’s routine.
Next we invited them complete three simple stations that all were designed to show what’s possible in their town.
Station 1: What I Appreciate…
They wrote down what they appreciated about Sunbury on 60 cards that broke down their town into small aspects (safety, education, street lights, events, senior life, transportation, etc).
Station 2: What I Hope to See…
They added their ideas through post it notes and mini lego structures that they placed on a giant map print out of their downtown.
Station 3: What We Can Co-create…
They placed stickers on a mosaic to reveal an image that symbolized their future. Each sticker was a photo that neighbors had previously taken highlighting all of the aspects of their town they most love - it included people, businesses, places, events, and historic photos.
After they completed each station, they were invited to share their information in a raffle to win gift cards to local businesses. On the raffle ticket, we invited them to share how they’d like to further participate in downtown revitalization efforts.
It was such a fun event and we had an amazing turn-out, far more than the organizing team had hoped for.
I love seeing communities come together in ways like this and how simple events can inspire a multitude of other ways they could creatively engage their community.
Big thanks to the team for inviting me in to help guide the process alongside you all.

Whether it's a wedding, a team building day, a corporate event, or a gala, there is a great temptation to enjoy the fun and beauty of an outdoor space to make your summer event memorable.
With record heat forecast for this summer, there are things you can do to minimize the heat's impact. But those things change your event and add to your expenses.
Check out this article from Bride's to learn more about all your options, including the best one, which might be moving your event indoors to a venue whose greenbelt perimeter and floor to ceiling windows give you the benefits of an outdoor event without the challenges.

As we approach Halloween, I’m reminded of one of our fav events from a couple of years back, we had the pleasure of producing a thrilling Halloween event for Wakefield BID that transformed the town centre into a spooky spectacle. The event was packed with activities for all ages:
🚂 A ghost train weaving through the heart of Wakefield
👻 All manner of scary walk-abouts, fire eaters and more
🛍️ A pop-up shop featuring eerie selfie rooms, crafty workshops, and theatrical actors bringing the scares
🌙 As night fell, scare actors invaded local pubs and restaurants, giving patrons a Halloween experience they won’t forget!
These types of events bring incredible value to town centres, and here are just a few of the benefits:
1. Boosts Foot Traffic and Local Economy – By drawing in crowds for unique experiences, events like this drive footfall to the area, increasing visibility and sales for local businesses. It’s a win-win for the entire community.
2. Enhances Community Engagement – Offering diverse activities encourages families and individuals of all ages to participate, fostering a sense of belonging and revitalising the town’s social atmosphere.
3. Showcases the Town as a Destination – A well-executed event creates a buzz that extends beyond the local community, attracting visitors from neighbouring areas and reinforcing Wakefield as a vibrant and cultural hotspot.
It was such fun to see Wakefield come alive for Halloween! 🕸️💀
