We want to take a moment to acknowledge Kris Mitchell, P.E., one of our valuable team members at SSE! See below to learn a little bit about Kris. 🔹 What do you enjoy most about your job? I enjoy the fact that we provide an excellent product to our clients. With SSE having so much experience in our industry, we are able to provide designs that are efficient, cost effective, and fabricator/erector friendly. 🔹 What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting out in this field? College provides a great base of knowledge that can be used in the engineering profession, but the majority of the required knowledge is going to be learned once you start your career. My advice would be to be prepared to learn as much as possible in your first couple of years on the job because this is when much of the relevant material will be learned. 🔹 What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of work? My favorite hobby outside of work would be playing golf although I don’t get to play as much as I would like. I love to vacation with the family whenever possible and to also go hiking with the family. 🔹 What inspired you to pursue a career in structural engineering? Growing up, I was always much better in math and sciences than in history or English classes. Because of this and the fact that I always loved building things, I gravitated toward the engineering program at Clemson. 🔹 What is your favorite project that you’ve worked on and why? My favorite project would be the Ford BOSK battery plant that we started back in 2022. This was a massive project that offered many challenges from a connection design complexity standpoint and shear volume standpoint.

On the morning of my final project conference, I was walking to the university on a hot day when I witnessed something that affirmed my belief in our project. I saw an older woman struggling to push a baby stroller up a hill on my street. It was sweltering, and the heat made her effort even more noticeable. Her daughter was walking beside her and asked her mother if it was hard to push the stroller uphill. The mother replied, "Yes," and at that moment, I smiled to myself, knowing we had chosen the right project. Our project, the E-Stroller, is a universal kit that makes a baby stroller motorized by two hub motors. The mechanism mounts to each side of the leg of the stroller. Once installed, you can adjust the angle and then apply pressure with two handles so the motor is pressed against the tire. The two hub motors then rotate the back tires, assisting in propelling the stroller. The primary purpose of the E-Stroller is to aid users in situations where pushing a stroller becomes challenging, such as going uphill. It is also cost-effective compared to motorized strollers currently available in the market and is unique in its ability to be installed on various stroller models. The E-Stroller features two modes of operation. The first is the regular mode, allowing the user to control the stroller from throttles mounted on the stroller handle, enabling forward movement and turns. The second mode is the swinging mode. With a press of a button on a wireless remote, the stroller gently swings forward and backward to calm the baby. After months of hard work, teamwork, and dedication, we are proud to present the E-Stroller. Throughout this project, we have learned and applied a great deal of knowledge from our mechanical engineering studies. I want to give a special shoutout to Oren Ferman and Gavriel Grotsky for collaborating on this project with me. Additionally, I would like to thank Professor Zvi Shiller ,Tamir Illan, and Moshe Kelman for their invaluable guidance and support in overcoming the obstacles we faced.
