Buy your girl Legos. Congratulations to Casey Hubbs on graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Colorado School of Mines. As a proud parent, I know that it takes a lot of hard work, ingenuity, and perseverance to achieve such a degree. But what makes me even happier is that Casey never stopped building Legos. Building with Legos instills creativity, design thinking, and problem-solving skills that are valuable in any field, especially engineering. Although Casey's current projects might not resemble the colorful blocks of her childhood, the skills she sharpened will undoubtedly contribute to essential items of our everyday lives. Who knows, perhaps her expertise could even be vital in crafting an AT-AT walker in a galaxy far far away... So if you have a girl (or boy!), consider buying her Legos. Enroll her in STEM camps; if there isn't one, build a program. Introduce her to technology. Build an iPhone app. Invest in a 3D printer. Pull apart a computer you no longer use and explore all the parts. Fix your toilet yourself and have her help. https://lnkd.in/dpQ_TdXW My eNGineering students made these Adirondack chairs. People ask me if I teach a woodworking class. While there is nothing wrong with that, I do not. We use wood and tools to make things, but the focus is on design, problem solving, and MAKING! My students also use Autodesk to 3D model, they are learning to use laser engravers, and my next big plan is to get a CNC router in my engineering lab. Yes, they can make beautiful things, but more importantly, they can use industry standard tools to solve problems and design solutions! #eNGineering #helluvaengineer #womeninSTEM BTW, ask me how many girls are in my classes!!

Some fun Product Dev updates from Team Repair HQ! 🔧 We rent out our repair kits to schools so that once kids are done learning how to repair, the gadgets come back to us to be ‘rebroken’ and reused by another class - meaning we can keep waste to a minimum. ♻️ However this inevitability means, when you’re dealing with excitable 10 year olds, that parts will get lost and damaged. We’re always R&Ding in the background to come up with solutions to replace those parts so that each gadget lifecycle is maximised. A lost screw isn’t hard to replace, but something like the spring from our RC Car Kit’s steering mechanism is a little trickier! That’s why we challenged Sofia, a year 10 student who was shadowing us last week, to come up with a spring replacement. Check out her 3D printed iterations - we were so impressed (it was her first time ever doing CAD!)
