It hasn't even been two years since OpenAI released #ChatGPT, and according to CEO Sam Altman, the era of large language models is just about over. As computing costs and data needs have skyrocketed, there are diminishing returns, and further advances in AI capability will have to come from the next big thing – whatever that is! https://lnkd.in/gzT9dt4P #GenAI

OpenAI just released GPT-4o mini - a model that makes it cheaper for developers and hence more accessible for a broader audience. Similar mini offerings already exist from Google's Gemini an others. Why is this relevant? - Open AI's previous models could be costly for developers, so making it cheaper, will enable more people to experiment with gen AI - the API will text and vision and soon audio and video! - benchmarked this version even performs better than GPT3.5, but not as good as the full Open AI ChatGPT and Google Gemini versions What do you think? Will this be the breakthrough for wider adoption? #OpenAI #AI #GPT4omini https://lnkd.in/eY8VqgX8

🔍 OpenAI's GPT-5 model is currently facing significant challenges, leading to uncertainty about its future. - Reports reveal that the project, known internally as Orion, is over budget and months behind schedule. The project has been under development for over 18 months, aimed at advancing the technology behind ChatGPT. - Microsoft, OpenAI's biggest investor, anticipated a midyear release, but ongoing issues have hindered progress. Reflecting on personal experiences, I recall the excitement when GPT-3 launched – it seemed like a game changer. We marveled at its capabilities, but as expectations keep growing, the pressure on OpenAI intensifies. 🌐 With AI projected to consume substantial investments, experts see immense potential for industries like healthcare, finance, and beyond. For instance, Cache Merrill, founder of Zibtek, emphasizes that more advanced language models could revolutionize customer service and digital marketing. Imagine chatbots offering seamless, context-driven interactions or AI-generated content tailored to individual consumer needs. What do you think? Is the potential of AI worth the hurdles it faces? 🧐 Statistics: Analysts project that tech giants could invest around $1 trillion in AI initiatives in the coming years. 🌟 It’s essential for us to stay informed and adaptable as these developments unfold. Embrace the changes and consider how you might leverage AI advancements in your work or daily life. #OpenAI #GPT5 #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #Technology #Innovation #DigitalTransformation

“I think it kind of sucks, Altman said when asked about GPT-4 and its most impressive capabilities. I think it is our job to live a few years in the future and remember that the tools we have now are going to kind of suck, looking backward at them, and that’s how we make sure the future is better.” “Altman described a glimmer of something amazing in GPT-4, but noted that its best use case is often as a brainstorming partner. The OpenAI CEO noted that ChatGPT is rarely useful with complicated, multi-step problems. When it does work, it’s magic, but those cases are few and far between.” What futuristic tools is he referring to? The article says: “There’s been great speculation about OpenAI’s next model. Every day on X, people try to predict when exactly GPT-5, GPT 4.5, or GPT-4.5 Turbo will drop. Everyone is waiting for the AI model that actually makes our life better. Folks got especially excited when Bing mysteriously cached search results for GPT-4.5 Turbo on OpenAI’s website, though the company says this was not them and there are no upcoming releases planned.” Almost one year ago he said the “age of big models is already over,” but now he seems to be saying otherwise. Why? Probably because OpenAI has been trying to reduce the high frequency of hallucinations, high cost of services based on ChatGPT such as Copilot, and high energy costs of training and operating ChatGPT. OpenAI has apparently tweaked GPT-4 many times over the last six months, but it is not clear the frequency of hallucinations has decreased. The Internet is filled with articles that describe newly found hallucinations (also ones from Sora). Many users are also concerned about the $30 a month price, which seems low to me because five to seven years ago McKinsey and other big consulting firms predicted economic gains of $16 trillion and last year those same firms predicted $4 trillion for generative #AI, both by 2030. Yet users are concerned about $30 a month? How much better will the new model be? My post a few days ago argued that GPT4 was barely better than GPT3.5, and that this type of small improvement is common with new #technologies. Big improvements often come in the first few years through design changes and then decrease over time unless there is some external form of improvement such as Moore’s Law. Think about PCs or the iPhone. There were big improvements in system performance during the early years that diminished over time despite 40% annual improvements in the performance to price ratios of memory and processor chips. With Moore’s Law having slowed considerably in the last 5 to 10 years, Altman can’t expect much more from Moore’s Law and those concerned with generative AI’s big appetite for energy are bound to push for regulations. The new model will have slightly higher performance, but also a higher price. #technology #innovation #artificialintelligence #hype #ethics https://lnkd.in/eDBsFwRZ
