Great article by Jane Barratt in Open Banker exploring how the 12 month reauthorization requirement in 1033 may increase friction for consumers. Thanks for citing my Visa consumer research! We can look across the pond to the UK’s “90-day rule” for a case study of how disruptive similar provisions are. The FCA noted 40% attrition at the 90-day mark. Why is that? Perhaps some consumers intend to disconnect and thoughtfully allow their consent to lapse. Others may be confused about the consequences of not reconfirming consent. Many simply miss the notification due to their busy lives. The magnitude of drop-off indicates that consumers aren’t fully benefitting from use cases that require longer duration connections. Eventually, the rule was amended to decouple authorization and authentication, somewhat reducing friction - but not fully solving the problem, since consumers still needs to reconfirm consent frequently. Could we see a similar impact in the US?
