The traffic and transport chaos in Manchester city centre is hitting hospitality businesses hard in the build up to Christmas. Changes to the road scheme on Deansgate and surrounding routes has left a host of restaurants and bars in the area with cancellations and no-shows. https://lnkd.in/epUQnnB9 #manchester #hospitality

Latest hospitality news….. The Times has published a list of 28 best places to eat in Britain according to chefs. CanEat in Pershore Road, Stirchley, Birmingham, was positioned in place number 17 following a recommendation by Stu Deeley. It was the only restaurant in Birmingham to be included on the list. According to CAMRA, 29 pubs are closing each week due to increased operating costs. 772 pubs closed temporarily or permanently in the first six months of last year. The organisation said that some pubs had been repurposed as restaurants, shops, and takeaways. ‘The Canal House’ in Birmingham will become ‘The Botanist’ from 6 March. Greggs and M&B have been named on a list of 524 businesses that have failed to pay some staff the national minimum wage or the national living wage. M&B said the underpayments were unintentional due to a technical mis-interpretation of the regulations. A spokesperson has said that all arrears have now been paid. Hospitality tech business SuperButler has teamed up with Laundryheap. The former has a website that digitises typical customer services required when staying at a hotel e.g. ordering meals, taxis etc., The company is initially targeting 1k hotels in London. Laundryheap offers on-demand laundry services in various UK cities including Birmingham, the Middle East and USA. 'The Electric' in Station Street, Birmingham has closed for the foreseeable future. The two-screen cinema first opened in 1909 and was believed to be the oldest working cinema in the UK. We all know that location is a key factor when you’re making decisions on your new hospitality venue. You want to make sure that you are situated in a viable location, making it convenient, accessible and a great experience for your customers. Some automatically think that an urban location is the way to go since you’ll be in the thick of things. But many people chase the rural dream, choosing a more relaxed pace by opening a restaurant or cafe in the country. The first few months of 2024 have shown a promising slowdown in business closures, with rampant cost inflation finally taking a back seat. Though we've bid farewell to one in 40 of our beloved pubs, restaurants, bars, and hotels over the past year, the pace at which we're losing them has notably decreased. With 368 sites closing in Q1 alone, it's a tough scene, but the resilience of this sector shines through: https://bit.ly/4b9di5C #Hospitality #HBDPartners #HospitalityHope #UKBusinessResilience

#Hospitalitysector shows ‘cautious confidence’ as rate of closures slows. Hospitality sector closures in Britain have slowed this year thanks to a “modest revival” in independent restaurants and dining out, a new report has revealed. There were an average of four closures a day in the first quarter of 2024, according to the latest Hospitality Market Monitor by CGA by NIQ and AlixPartners, which is down from an average of eight a day in 2023. Despite the market being down by 2.5 per cent year-on-year, with one in 40 venues shutting in the past 12 months, the report signals a slow yet positive return to “cautious confidence” for the hospitality industry as cost of living pressures begin to ease. Karl Chessell, director at CGA by NIQ said: “After a very challenging few years, these numbers give grounds for tentative optimism that hospitality closures will slow as 2024 goes on.

If this was a one-off, it wouldn't matter. There are many reasons why businesses close. The reason why I am sharing this is because Victoria has downward trajectory on businesses - our state was the only one in Australia last year to see the number of registered businesses decrease: many shut down, many moved to other states. In my conversations with small business owners in Ringwood - where my electorate office is - they share how they are being hammered by rising taxes and fines from the Labor government on one side (Victorians are one of the highest taxed and fined people in Australia) and skyrocketing amenity bills (water and energy) on the other. Many wonder how long can they last? It appears that the Labor carnival in Victoria has come to an end - and the reality of how they have let down the state is staring us in the face. #FixBrokenVictoria #Labor #smallbusiness #taxes #bills #energy #electricity #gas
A cost crunch has killed the Carringbush Hotel. The inner Melbourne watering hole will close its doors on Sunday at 10pm as the business succumbs to soaring expenses that co-owner Liam Matthews says are hitting pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes especially hard. “The cost of everything in Australia for hospitality right now is just horrendous,” Mr Matthews told The Australian Financial Review. “We’re putting more than in the till than ever, but what is left over is less than ever.” #consumerspending #inflation #melbourne #hospitality #business #ausecon https://lnkd.in/gBrukve9

Taking a lease of a restaurant? Throughout December and January, I will be posting a series of things to consider before you agree those all-important heads of terms to ensure the lease enables you to get on with what you do best: creating a great experience for your guests. Tip 1 of 5: Turnover rent. Many landlords are now willing to share some of the risk of a site not performing as expected by entering into turnover rent leases. Both parties will want to maximise their turnover and profits, but tenants should carefully consider: 🍽️ What ‘gross turnover’ will include and what items should be excluded, such as monies received for takeaways/deliveries, staff tips, or whether the landlord is looking to capture tangential income; 🍽️How the turnover rent will be paid in practice. Typically, turnover rent is calculated in arrears but landlords may want payments on account. Also, consider appropriate intervals to protect your cash flow and whether the turnover rent will be in addition to or as a top-up of any base rent payable; and 🍽️Where possible, try to avoid notional turnover for any periods that the restaurant is closed. #LeaseToLauch #Restaurant #Hospitality #LandlordandTenant

Phillip was in the media again on Saturday, as featured in the Courier Mail’s article 'New Venue Openings - Foodie Chiefs Sound Alarm Over Tsunami of New Brisbane Venues'. He highlights the challenges facing Brisbane's hospitality industry. With 124 new cafe and restaurant licenses approved in just three months, Brisbane’s food scene is expanding rapidly—but is this level of growth sustainable? Phillip is calling for smarter regulation and support, advocating for small businesses to ensure that every venue has a chance to thrive, not just survive. He questions whether the city’s population can support this level of growth: "Do we need 100 new venues with the population we have? No. Can we sustain 100 new venues? No. The data tells us." At The Coffee Commune, we’re committed to being a voice for small businesses. We provide essential resources and data to help operators navigate a competitive market and make informed decisions. By persistently advocating for what small businesses need, we aim to make a positive impact on Brisbane’s hospitality landscape and support our community in growing sustainably.
