Pleased to share the story I wrote today for Aviation Week Network about the £1.18 million ($1.49 million) in funding that Rolls-Royce secured from the UK Space Agency that will be used to jointly develop technologies with the U.S. for a fission nuclear system for space power applications. Excerpts below: “Innovative technologies such as this one could pave the way for continuous human presence on the Moon, whilst enhancing the wider UK space sector, creating jobs and generating further investment,” Professor Anu Ojha, director of Championing Space at the UK Space Agency, said in an announcement. The new investment tranche follows a £2.9 million award that Rolls-Royce received from the UK Space Agency in March 2023 under the Lunar Surface Nuclear Power Contract and Phase 1 of the IBF project. In November 2023 at the UK Space Conference in Belfast, Rolls-Royce unveiled a conceptual nuclear reactor that could power a future Moon base for astronauts. This collaboration comes amid rising interest in the potential for nuclear power to significantly increase the length and scientific value of future space missions. If effectively utilized in space, nuclear power could deliver a “step change” in mission capability across a wide platform of applications, Rolls-Royce says.
