Cycling in snowy and icy conditions? No problem! In #Finland, people don’t let the winter stop them from cycling. This is thanks to winter maintenance and preparedness of the cyclists. Of course, studded tyres also improve safety in winter. The aim in winter maintenance is that there shouldn’t be more than a few centimetres of snow on pedestrian or cycling routes. Once the snowfall ends, the snow is removed from paths within four hours. "Swapping just one trip per day from driving to cycling for 200 days of the year would save half a tonne of carbon dioxide over the course of a year." Embrace #EarthDay by ditching the car and hopping on your bike instead! 🚲 Striving to reduce our carbon footprint is essential for all of us, and cycling short distances stands out as one of the most effective ways individuals can contribute. All forms of travel have a carbon footprint, but some produce fewer emissions than others. Cycling, surprisingly, emits less carbon than walking, and even more so with e-cycles. Research supports this surprising fact: cyclinguk.org/carbon

Let's keep pushing forward with integrating cycling practices, infrastructure, and policies in cities worldwide. It's crucial to recognise that various societal groups have different perceptions of cycling. Our backgrounds and personal experiences influence our affiliation, knowledge, and skills related to cycling. As urban planners, we must improve our understanding of how diverse cycling environments and infrastructures impact different groups, such as women. #Genderplanning #Cycling #Bicycleday

Happy bike day! One thing I miss greatly from living in Sweden is the walking and cycling infrastructure in cities. When I lived in Umeå in northern Sweden, I rarely needed car or other transport to get me to work or downtown. Biking was the most convenient and often the fastest way of transport thanks to the great and safe infrastructure for biking. Living in around the same city-size in Slovakia, I can say that biking in cities is very difficult, inconvenient, and often very hazardous. No such infrastructure was planned back in the past and it´s very difficult to make safe and convenient cycling paths within the current infrastructure. In addition, and sadly, it seems that large part of the society cannot see the downs of the current state and the benefits of a better, and more sustainable, cycling infrastructure. I hope the paradigm will shift one day, the sooner the better 🚲 #bike #mobility #cycling #WorldCycleDay #sustainable

European cities are taking steps to reward cycling with projects like Bike2Green in which you attach a sensor kit to your bicycle and get shopping vouchers for the distance traveled, with higher rewards for cycling trips to school and work. In Taiwan, the publicly funded bikeshare YouBike launched the Carbon Reduction Passbook app 2 weeks ago which records users' carbon reduction data based on their YouBike rides and allows them to accumulate credits to exchange for prizes at Giant or partner stores. Looking forward to a project like Bike2Green that would include the large majority of Taiwanese riders who prefer their own bikes: in 2023 2.1% of commuters in Taipei City rode their personal bicycles while 1% used YouBikes, the only available bikeshare. https://lnkd.in/ga4cYJWp

🌱 Sustainable Cycling Initiatives: Cycling for a Greener Tomorrow! Many cities around the world are increasingly investing in cycling infrastructure to promote sustainable transport and reduce carbon emissions. For example: Copenhagen has become a model for bike-friendly cities, with over 390 kilometers of dedicated bike lanes and initiatives like the "Copenhagenize" project, which aims to make cycling the most attractive mode of transport. Amsterdam is known for its extensive cycling network, including bike parking facilities, bike-sharing programs, and traffic calming measures that prioritize cyclists' safety. Portland, Oregon, has introduced initiatives like "Bike Share" programs and community cycling events to encourage residents to choose biking over driving. These efforts not only make cycling safer but also promote a healthier lifestyle and reduce traffic congestion. 💡 Did You Know? Studies show that for every 1% increase in cycling, cities can see a reduction of up to 0.3% in traffic congestion! #SustainableTransport #Seatylock #GreenCycling #UrbanMobility

The long-discussed European Declaration on Cycling, which recognizes the benefits in mobility, health, as well as opportunities in employment / economical / industrial levels, was signed today. Good news for light mobility, we were waiting for this happening a long time and hopefully gives this declaration a boost to the local governments in countries and cities to review their strategy for two wheel light mobility. It should open the path for more two wheel transportation and give the cyclist as well a better and safer infrastructure which should lead to more people using a bike. What does the declaration say? The EU states have agreed to: 1) Create more and better cycling / light mobility infrastructure 2) Encourage inclusive, affordable, healthy mobility 3) Boost financial and mindpower investment into cycling 4) Develop and strengthen cycling mobility and recreational policies 5) Improve data collection and analysis 6) Develop a world-leading cycling industry, providing long-term environmentally positive employment 7) Support multimodality and tourism 8) Improve road safety and security This initiative is sure to benefit not just cyclists; but also for light mobility users, citizens, workers and user of the public transport. https://lnkd.in/ewBKCbHP Stromer Bikes Desiknio
