"It's like a family reunion!" That's one of the last things I heard last night as Boston Fintech Week wraps up today. I'm conflicted when hearing the phrase. On one hand, it's always great to see the faces in this region pushing fintech innovation forward. Founders provide updates on their progress. State representatives give some insight into their agendas moving forward (albeit relatively vague). Universities highlight various labs and studios to encourage students to build. Investors discuss theses to pursue. And every conversation has to include the theme of the day (AI) like a sneeze that has to get out. On the other hand, what does it say about the fintech industry in Boston when you're more likely to connect with someone at NEXT year's fintech week than at any other point in the year? It feels like the fintech ecosystem here is a bit like a ship without a rudder. Sure, I applaud the work of organizations like Mass Fintech Hub , MassChallenge, Massachusetts Division of Banks, and Mass Bankers Association, but the bar has been raised (mine personally, nationally, and globally). If this region expects to lead the charge in fintech innovation, there has to be MUCH more full-time focused work THROUGHOUT the year to bring together the initiatives of all these incredible but disparate orgs. It can't just be a rallying thought summarized and discussed for one week once a year. Otherwise, we're all just playing in our own siloed sandboxes making life much harder on ourselves than it needs to be. Shout out to Ron Shevlin for reawakening my inner writer.

Doconomy raises a $34 million series B to boost climate action in banking #Doconomy, a pioneering #fintech company dedicated to empowering banks with tools to promote climate action and financial wellbeing, has successfully closed a €34 million Series B funding round. Founded by Mathias Wikström, Doconomy serves over 100 clients in 35 different markets globally. This funding round was co-led by UBS Next, the venture and innovation arm of UBS, and CommerzVentures, a pioneering venture capital firm specializing in climate fintech. New investor S&P Global joined the round, along with prominent existing investors Motive Ventures, PostFinance, and Tenity. Doconomy's innovative solutions help banks bridge the gap between intention and action by providing tools that encourage climate-friendly choices while enhancing financial wellbeing. With partnerships with prominent organizations like the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Mastercard, S&P Trucost, and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), Doconomy is at the forefront of the sustainability movement in finance. This development is significant as research shows that 63% of consumers globally are seeking sustainable options in all aspects of their lives, and 64% believe financial institutions play a key role in promoting sustainable living. However, 53% see banks as absent from the sustainability debate. Doconomy aims to change this narrative by making sustainability accessible and integral to every transaction. As Mathias Wikström puts it, "We want to make every transaction count by empowering everyone to play their part in tackling the climate crisis." For banks, this means enhanced customer engagement, better understanding of client needs, and a stronger bottom line. For consumers, it provides tools to make informed financial decisions that benefit both their wallets and the planet. 2024 𝐇𝐒𝐁𝐂 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐒𝐡𝐞𝐞𝐭 𝐆𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞 – 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐮𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 📢 Excited to announce some flash results (starting with the Diversity Rider) from our HSBC Innovation Banking VC term sheet guide that provides an independent view of what is considered “market standard” for key terms in UK & European term sheets across Seed-Series C. 🔍 The guide is based on anonymised aggregated data from 426 VC final term sheets issued in 2023, and is part of our wider founder success initiatives to help increase the probability of success for early-stage businesses. The guide allows founders to understand the complexities of a term sheet & what they should be benchmarking against, as well as giving VCs a benchmark on the wider market & how their “standard” term sheet compares. This is especially important given how the VC landscape has changed between 2021-2023. 𝘿𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙧𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙘𝙡𝙖𝙪𝙨𝙚 👉 A number of VCs have committed to including diversity riders in their term sheets in an effort to expand access to underrepresented minority groups. The results show an improvement with an increase from 1% in 21 to 8% in 2022 and to 11% in 23 – so still a long way for the industry to go but the journey has started. “Steady, incremental change can create remarkable, monumental results. A modest increase in the implementation of a diversity rider represents a crucial step forward for inclusivity within a sector that has a profound influence on our economy.
