It is a pleasure to contribute to the special issue of Transatlantic Policy Quarterly focused on "Change, Security, and Sustainability in Energy." Invited to share insights on this timely topic, I examine in my article, Sustainable Power: Transformations in Global Energy Security, how the concept of #energysecurity has broadened beyond fossil fuels to encompass the resilience of renewable systems and the infrastructure required to support them. As the climate crisis heightens the urgency of decarbonization, this transition introduces new challenges: ensuring grid resilience, reliable storage, and a stable supply of critical minerals. Additionally, geopolitical dynamics increasingly shape energy strategies, demanding a balance between traditional and clean energy priorities. My hope is that this contribution, drawing extensively on the International Energy Agency (IEA)’s expertise, provides a thoughtful perspective on the complex path toward a secure and sustainable energy future amidst evolving global pressures. 🌍 The IEA's Evolution: Steering Global Energy Policy for Half a Century 🕰️✨ Celebrating 50 years of impactful presence, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has been at the forefront of global energy policy, navigating through crises, transformations, and the urgent call for sustainability. Founded in 1974 in response to the oil crisis, the IEA initially focused on oil supply security. Over the decades, it has significantly expanded its mandate to embrace broader energy challenges, including sustainable development, clean energy technologies, and climate change mitigation. 🔹 1974: Formation in response to the oil crisis, emphasizing oil supply security. 🔹 1980s-2000s: Gradual expansion to include a diverse range of member countries. 🔹 2015: Adoption of a modernization strategy to include clean energy, energy efficiency, and engagement with emerging economies. 🔹 Recent Years: Further expansion of the mandate to guide global transitions to net-zero emissions and address critical minerals for clean energy technologies. As we reflect on the IEA's journey, it's clear that its role has evolved from focusing solely on oil security to advocating for a balanced, sustainable, and inclusive global energy future. 𝐏𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲, 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 Climate change alone is projected to cause a loss of up to 22% of global gross production by the end of the 21st century. This highlights the urgent need to address climate-related challenges and transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. Policymakers are under increasing pressure to lead this effort. However, despite significant global progress, there is still a critical gap between rhetoric and action. Close scrutiny and accountability are vital in bridging this divide and ensuring the effective implementation of clean energy initiatives. Energy efficiency policies around the world are evolving, with a focus on adaptability and engagement to promote the adoption of cleaner technologies. Simultaneously, governance strategies such as strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and policy alignment are essential for successfully coordinating these efforts. The International Energy Agency's ambitious roadmap for achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050 emphasizes the urgency of global action and transformation within the energy sector. Recent trends indicate a promising shift in global energy investments. In 2021, less than 10% of investments were allocated to clean energy projects, highlighting the urgent need for accelerated action. However, in 2023, there was a significant transformation in global energy investments towards cleaner alternatives. In 2023, total energy investment reached USD 2.8 trillion. Out of this amount, more than USD 1.7 trillion was dedicated to clean energy projects, including renewable power, nuclear energy, grids, storage, low-emission fuels, efficiency enhancements, and end-use renewables and electrification. Clean energy investment surged at a faster rate than investment in fossil fuels during this period. Clean energy investment experienced a 24% growth, outpacing the 15% increase in fossil fuel investment. This positive trajectory reflects a strong alignment between costs, climate objectives, energy security, and industrial strategies. The recovery from the pandemic and responses to the global energy crisis have propelled momentum towards cleaner energy sources. Despite the challenges, there is cause for optimism. By holding policymakers accountable and advocating for transparent and effective policies, stakeholders can contribute to real progress towards a sustainable energy future. #cleanenergy #climateaction #sustainability #policymaking #renewableenergy #climatechange

Tuesday morning marks the beginning of the IEA Ministerial and associated high-level policy dialogues. U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm leads the U.S. delegation, joined by Special Presidential Envoy for Climate (SPEC) John Kerry, and Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Geoffrey Pyatt. The 2024 Ministerial Meeting will be co-chaired by Ireland and France, with Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and Poland as vice chairs. The focus of the Ministerial is "IEA to 2050: Challenges and opportunities for the energy sector's transformation to tackle climate change."  This theme reflects the agency's recognition that ensuring energy security and achieving clean energy transitions go hand-in-hand, requiring strategic attention as we move towards 2050.   So what are the key goals of this Ministerial meeting? There are several: 1.      Reiterating and strengthening the commitment to the IEA's core mission of Securing energy supplies and promoting market stability. 2.      Supporting and accelerating the transition to clean energy, and encouraging ambitious action by member countries to achieve global climate goals. 3.      Fostering collaboration among governments, industry, and stakeholders to address global energy challenges.   The IEA Ministerial kicks off Tuesday morning at 8:30 with the Innovation Forum, where SPEC John Kerry will be a featured speaker. Want to follow along at home? DNV published their global Energy Transition Outlook (2024-2050) today. It contains a mix of hope and despair. On a positive note, 2023 saw an 80% increase in solar deployment to 400 GW, which coupled with falling costs of batteries will steadily decarbonise our electricity and road transport sectors. 2024 is likely to see 'peak global emissions', primarily due to the deployment of renewables in China. Global emissions will then fall steadily, halving by 2050. Unfortunately, this leads to a 2.2 degree increase in temperature by 2100. Key messages are: - we should electrify everything that we can; - hydrogen will be used for the 'hard to reach' sectors; - CCS is needed, but progress will be slow due to cost. DNV do not see a credible path to net zero emissions by 2050. Creating a zero carbon economy requires new technology, investment, consumer acceptance, supporting regulatory conditions and a global price on emissions.
