Changes both inside and outside academia have created a crisis for many small and mid-size colleges and universities. This blog opens a discussion on repositioning the role of grants within the academic revenue stream.

" Those professors with the very highest evaluations “are often poor teachers,"It is a matter that requires a lot of considerations. The current study is based on a computational simulation -- no actual professors were involved (or harmed). That allowed Esarey and Valdes to directly measure teaching effectiveness, which is still very hard to measure in real life. Experts in this area have long advised against basing high-stakes personnel decisions on student ratings of instruction alone. A number of famous institutions and professional groups have made commitments and policy changes to this effect. But SETs still have a major foothold in these processes on many campuses, as they are relatively easy and inexpensive compared to other means of assessing teaching quality. https://lnkd.in/gaqbg_Wq

This study explores the "illusion of attendance" in large university lectures, highlighting the gaps between staff and student perceptions of learning and actual attendance. It underscores the limitations of transmissive lectures and the impact of anxiety and the hidden curriculum on student behavior. https://lnkd.in/eutwt3nD

Another article about the elitism within higher education, this time focused on the professoriate. We have a lot of work to do, within policy and within practice, to make higher education accessible and meaningful to the masses. https://lnkd.in/gac5ZuaV

Lean in to flexible deadlines, Inclusive Instructor Friends. Student voices from our national research study rang loud and clear on this theme. Hear our advice on dealing with this topic in our new book. #EnhancingInclusiveInstruction
Another theme arising in our study for #EnhancingInclusiveInstruction: “Numerous study participants [student respondents] recounted the importance of having flexible deadlines as a marker of inclusive course design.” p. 25 What could an instructor do with this finding without sacrificing deadlines? In #EnhancingInclusiveInstruction we describe a possible structured and proactive approach to implementing flexible deadlines by giving assignments a priority deadline in addition to an extension date without penalty. The Chronicle of Higher Education explored the efficacy of this approach this week in the Teaching newsletter by presenting some recent research. Check it out. #HigherEd #Teaching Khadijah A. ‘Academic freedom is on life support,’ say professors surveyed on tenure, censorship Jay Waagmeester “A survey of professors at Florida universities found that new state government limits on tenure and academic freedom, plus the state’s political climate, have prompted many of them to apply for jobs outside the Sunshine State. Of approximately 350 faculty working almost exclusively in Florida public institutions, 135 — 39% — reported that since 2022 they have applied for a job in higher education in another state. Popular destinations include California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, and New York. … The Wall Steet Journal released its annual rankings of public universities Monday and it showed Florida’s institutions tumbling in the rankings, including the University of Florida losing its #1 spot. … Uploading a different syllabus The effects of that law and related efforts by the state government have left professors bowdlerizing their courses. “We literally upload a different syllabus to the public system than we distribute to our students in class just to avoid having to explain every single detail of it to some draconian maniac from the state legislature,” one professor submitted in the survey.” https://lnkd.in/egauCSyc

This is where we share work news is it now? I'm very pleased to talk about our new preprint, currently under review. What's the relationship between practical exam performance and student academic practice, self-efficacy, and self-esteem? The results may shock you! In fact, we can find no evidence of a relationship. So what does this mean for student support? We discuss some plausible and not-so-plausible explanations in terms of flaws in our methods (but note that this was a pre-registered methods study, so we were constricted in our ability to change our hypotheses too much!), but our opinion is that there has been too much fetishisation of exam process in recent student cohorts, perhaps in part due to COVID19 impacts on teaching and assessment, and we need to think carefully about how we help students integrate their knowledge and practice to support them to succeed in practical performance tasks. Would love to know what you think! https://lnkd.in/eNdB8fH7
‘Those who attend usually pass’, and other myths we can’t prove in practical exam performance: the role of academic practice, proxy-self efficacy, and self-esteem.
