With the doors soon to open on Day Two of Recycling Expo at Excel London it's a good moment to reflect on some of the themes from yesterday. The waste and recycling management landscape has evolved, and one of the significant risks to emerge is the disposal of lithium batteries. Their use is prolific, and they are getting smaller, and more powerful. They are increasingly responsible for causing fires in recycling facilities - they may have even started in the lorries before they reach the facility - and statistics are showing an upward trend. The use of fire detection and verification technology is critical. While it will not stop fires from 'starting', the early detection and swift action it enables will stop them in their tracks. This will prevent an escalation that otherwise would only take a few minutes to become out of control #EverySecondCounts What are your thoughts on the increasing risk of lithium batteries? #WASTE #COLLECTION AND TRANSPORT WITHIN THE CITY OF WESTMINSTER, LONDON. https://lnkd.in/e_ETrvFj CASE STUDIES of the 14th international conference ENVIROMANAGEMENT 2024 - Štrbské Pleso, Slovakia https://lnkd.in/gSikvgqY Annotation: Westminster City Council is undertaking work to replace its entire 200-strong #wastemanagement vehicle fleet, in the biggest #decarbonisation programme of its kind by a UK local authority. Electric trucks were the only option for the city council that provided the robustness and reliability required. Many of these vehicles will be housed at the new fully electric depot at Landmann Way in south London. The electric vehicles will charge their batteries by drawing #renewable electric power direct from an adjacent #energyrecovery facility which uses the waste collected from homes and businesses in Westminster as fuel. Westminster’s waste management fleet completes 50 million collections every year and each electric vehicle saves up to 89% CO2e compared to a diesel-powered model. Due to the service’s extremely high profile, this monumental change could only be accommodated with the most rigorous of planning and project management to ensure service reliability would never be compromised. Failure was simply not an option. This presentation will outline the planning and management of the biggest fully electric waste management fleet in Europe, from inception to mobilisation of this £50M project.
