🌀Desertas petrels are the ultimate storm chasers! A new #WHOI study shows these North Atlantic seabirds don’t shy away from hurricanes– but actually use them to gain advantage over their prey. As hurricane-force winds and waves churn up the ocean, small fish, squid, and crustaceans come closer to the surface, making them easier for the petrels to catch. 📲Learn more about these rare seabirds from The Washington Post: go.whoi.edu/WaPo-DP 📸 by Kirk Zufelt

Perhaps you experienced this recently with Hurricane Helene. Social media chatter is hindering the ability of rescue officials and government organizations to get vital messaging across to people in need during natural disasters. New research from Jose E Ramirez-Marquez in the Department of Systems and Enterprises at Stevens shows that during four recent major hurricanes, important public safety messaging was drowned out by more trivial social content—including people tweeting about pets, sharing human-interest stories, or bickering about politics. “This really is zero-sum: if conversations about animals or politics are taking up all the oxygen, it’s that much harder for other, potentially more important messages to break through,” Dr. Ramirez-Marquez warns. 📣It's only fitting to bring awareness to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Hurricane Preparedness Week with an offical StormReady designation. 🌀 🐾On Thursday, the National Weather Service Tampa Bay Florida (NWS) officially designated ZooTampa at Lowry Park as StormReady, making it the first non-theme park Zoo in Florida to receive this prestigious national designation. 📣 🐾To achieve this significant milestone our Safety and Compliance team had to complete a comprehensive review of the Zoo’s severe weather safety procedures and develop a proactive response plan to better prepare the Zoo for severe weather events. 🌀StormReady, established in 1999, is a nationwide program that helps communities take a proactive approach to protect citizens during severe weather events. StormReady is a voluntary National Weather Service program that provides communities with clear-cut advice through a partnership between the local Weather Service Office, state and local emergency managers, and the media. 📣With this recognition, ZooTampa joins more than 3,350 sites and nearly 1207 communities nationwide to earn the elite designation. In Florida, 67 counties and 164 sites have been named StormReady. ⛈️ #ZooTampa #hurricanepreparednessweek #StormReady #nationaweatherservice #NOAA

Hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean officially began on June 1, and with National Weather Service forecasters predicting storm activity to be “above normal” this season, some Florida cities are readying technologies that can help with response. Strong storms can knock out power lines and cell towers and interrupt internet service, putting the cloud-based technologies used by emergency dispatch units and first responders at risk. But some Florida cities are adding layers of technology that can work under these limiting conditions. https://lnkd.in/dPc-Gvpd

This is a perfect example of why spending a little more on hurricane screens that offer UV and insect protection is crucial. These screens could have kept the patio secure, avoiding damage to impact sliders and windows. DM to discuss any South Florida projects before investing in insect or solar screens.
