There's a contentious viewpoint suggesting that the extensive use of geospatial technology could exacerbate existing societal inequalities, contribute to environmental degradation, and neglect the rights of indigenous communities. This perspective raises concerns about how the adoption of such technology might perpetuate historical injustices, particularly in land mapping and resource management. Additionally, the development of geospatial infrastructure may lead to adverse environmental impacts and the displacement of marginalized groups. Critics emphasize the importance of prioritizing ethical considerations and implementing robust accountability measures to address these complex socio-environmental challenges. What do you think?

3 steps to apply Nature based solution' projects👌
🌍 How can Nature-Based Solutions be applied? It is a transdisciplinary approach that involves stakeholders, is based on system understanding and aims to increase the amount of ecosystem services provided. The following 3 steps will help in the implementation: 🔎 Step 1: Understand the system This involves acquiring in-depth knowledge of the natural, socio-economic, and governmental aspects of the system. 🔗 Step 2: Link values to your system Identify which functions and services the system has and can provide and recognise how these functions are valued. ⚙ Step 3: Develop the solution This step includes design details, project delivery, monitoring, adaptation and maintenance. 📸 NBS application examples are shown in the IUCN visual. 𝗗𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝟮: More than Just Backup Storage! Many people equate digital preservation with simply storing digital artifacts on a backup system. However, it’s far more complex and critical than that. Have you ever heard of WordPerfect, stiffies, or floppy disks? These once-common storage formats are now obsolete. So, what happened to all the digital artifacts stored on these media? This is where digital preservation comes in. It's the process of ensuring that your digital artifacts remain accessible and usable over time. Imagine needing to access a crucial document 20 years from now—how do you ensure it’s still readable and intact? 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿: 1. 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗘𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Storage formats and technologies will continue to evolve and possibly become obsolete. Adapting to these changes is essential. 2. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 & 𝗨𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: It's not just about storing data. Ensuring that future technologies can read and interpret your data is equally important. 3. 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆: Develop a preservation strategy that includes regular updates and migrations to newer formats and technologies. 4. 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁 𝗠𝗶𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Regularly update file formats to current standards. 5. 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮: Maintain detailed metadata to track the context and authenticity of files. 6. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘆: Store multiple copies in different locations to safeguard against data loss. 7. 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀: Periodically check and update your digital preservation strategy to adapt to new technologies. For instance, think about how a WordPerfect document or a file saved on a floppy disk might be accessed today. Without proper preservation efforts, these valuable artifacts could be lost to time. Digital preservation ensures we protect our digital heritage and maintain the integrity of our data for future generations. So, how do you plan to ensure your digital artifacts stand the test of time? #DigitalPreservation #Heritage #Archiving #DataIntegrity #FutureProofing Feel free to share your thoughts and strategies on digital preservation in the comments below! ⬇️

🔍 **What is Digital Preservation?** Digital Preservation refers to the series of managed activities necessary to ensure continued access to digital materials for as long as necessary. As defined by the Digital Preservation Coalition, it encompasses all the actions required to maintain access to digital materials beyond the limits of media failure or technological and organizational change. 💡 **What Does This Really Mean?** Imagine the irreplaceable loss experienced when a library burns down, such as the tragic incident at the University of Cape Town (Read more: [Library Fire](https://lnkd.in/dbT_kcnr)). The immediate question is: What have we lost, and can we afford to lose our valuable assets? This incident is only one example of losing our heritage. In today's digital world, the issue is even more pressing. Unlike physical artifacts, digital materials are intangible; we can't "see" what we lose. This makes digital preservation even more crucial than we often realize. 📂 Archival materials are supposed to be transferred to national or provincial archives, but the reality is far more complex. Ensuring these digital assets remain accessible and intact requires a strategic, well-executed preservation plan. 🛠️ **Key Takeaways:** - Digital preservation is about maintaining access to digital content despite technological and organizational changes. - The loss of digital heritage can be just as devastating as the loss of physical artifacts. - A robust digital preservation strategy is essential for safeguarding our collective knowledge and history. Join the conversation: Are we doing enough to preserve our digital heritage? What strategies have you found effective in your organization? #DigitalPreservation #Heritage #Archiving #InformationManagement #FutureProofing
