More of you should go out in public with a clipboard. 📋 Many years ago, I worked with a global brand that wanted to test out some new consumer messaging. Did we hire an expensive market research firm to do all of the testing and report back? Nah. A group of us in various parts of the US went out in public and field tested the messaging ourselves. For my part, I bought a bunch of $5 Starbucks gift cards, went to a local mall, and offered people a gift card if they provided their honest feedback on the messaging. (To show how long ago this was, this was back when you could get an awesome drink at Starbucks for under $5. So, circa 1924.) Sure, you could do this online now in an impersonal way. But making that connection with a stranger and getting their unfiltered feedback will teach you more about what people really think than a series of fancy slides.

Introductory meetings are about creating value and building connections. I often like to add a personal touch by sending a Hallmark greeting card with a $5 Starbucks gift card when requesting a meeting. Some of the best partnerships start with coffee and great conversation. Imagine...while this example might be on the extreme end, I'd be willing to bet that these kinds of things happen regularly, in many many organizations... This is the kind of mindset that happens when your frontline staff don't feel valued, recognized or appreciated.
