I will be giving a talk at the ACS Conference in Denver next month titled, "Beyond Control Charts and Compliance: Exploring Cannabis Safety from a Deming / Juran Perspective of Quality" My observation: Most companies mistake Quality. And it puts worker and consumer safety at risk. They mistake it for compliance. They mistake it for efficiency. They mistake it for customer satisfaction. They mistake it for shareholder satisfaction. They mistake it for optics. If a company does not have a firm grasp of what Quality means to their mission, what hope do they have of managing it? And who pays the price of ignoring Quality? Usually it is workers and consumers with their health. This talk synthesizes over a decade of lessons I have learned from working in Cannabis testing and production labs and studying how companies manage quality and safety in their organizations. This talk is aimed at any current or future scientists planning to work in the Cannabis industry and I intend on offering some red flags and warning signs that a lab's operations are in trouble. This talk focuses on both analytical labs and product manufacturing facilities and is as real as it gets. I won't say I've seen it all, but I've certainly seen a lot, and I want you to learn from my experiences and failures. But it's not all doom and gloom! Ultimately I will end up highlighting how Deming's System of Profound Knowledge model can serve as a vital tool to course correct lab operations, improve morale, revitalize company culture and ensure worker and consumer safety (all while ensuring compliance and great optics!)
