“Just the facts, ma’am.” Even if you never watched the popular TV show Dragnet, I’m sure you have heard this phrase at some point! Especially when conducting investigations, all I and other investigators need and want are “the facts." Not alternative facts, not what could have happened, not what the interviewee thinks might have happened, but what actually happened. What did you see? What did you hear? Were you present when the act or incident in question occurred? It’s okay if a witness can’t remember, or doesn’t know, or never knew the answer to the particular question. It’s totally okay to say that! Folks are often anxious when asked to sit for an interview with an investigator, and that’s understandable for anyone who has never been through this process, whether on the job or elsewhere. PRODUCING 90 SECONDS OF TV: The amount of work that goes into filing a 90-second report for TV takes hours. My work day is scheduled to start at 2:30pm. I get into the office at 12:30pm. I immediately begin researching, making calls, vetting, fact checking, and setting up interviews. Then we hit the road and record interviews. This is important because we don’t just produce for TV. We upload interviews to YouTube, social media and the website. Then I write the story, one for TV and one for the web. The viewer sees 90-seconds on TV. The reader sees 3 minutes worth of text. But I spend 8+ hours making sure everything is correct, fair, informative and valuable…all under deadline. After a live shot, the day is done. Then I do it all over again tomorrow.
