With Helene devastating my hometown region in Tennessee and now Milton looming so close to my Florida home, it's hard to describe what it feels like to have a professional background in sustainability. I need to preface this and share that I am a trained systems thinker (thank you The UnSchool of Disruptive Design), which means when I look at a situation, I scrutinize its dynamics and analyze how everything is interconnected. We shouldn't talk about healthcare without talking about food systems, for example; nor should we talk about the environment without talking about the economy. Unraveling complex problems and finding + designing solutions demands this thinking tool, which is a skill that anyone can learn. In fact, it's actually pretty intuitive, but we get socialized and educated out of it. In other words, we can't talk about solving problems without talking about the way that people are educated in our school systems. In schools, everything is broken apart. An hour block for Reading, an hour block for Math, maybe 20 minutes for Recess if you're lucky, 30 minutes for Science or Social Studies every other day; you get the point. We've compartmentalized everything and in turn, reduced our inherent ability to explore interconnections. Of course, this is connected to legislation (the era of standardized assessments kicked off by GWB's No Child Left Behind), but like the other complex problems we face, so much of it comes down to living in an economic system that is ride or die for year-on-year linear growth -- at the expense of everything else. The environment is continuously exploited. Workers are continuously exploited. Even our values are exploited as manipulative tactics are implemented to keep the status quo of this economic system intact. Despite how heavy it feels right now, we can honor the sadness of our current reality without succumbing to doom and gloom. While I strongly believe that governments and businesses need to be leading efforts to ensure our children's futures aren't filled with environmental disaster, we do each have individual agency to make different choices that disrupt the current status quo that serves a select subgroup of people. We can use our voices, demand accountability, and re-design the systems that we know are not intended to work for everyone. Within just 4 months of joining she got 5 new schools and increased her income by 60% taking home an extra £2k per month, with 6 more schools in the pipeline. Fast forward 14 months and she’s innovated our strategies to have a massive 47% response rate (landing 9 new demos with her DREAM nurseries) for her latest campaign. I can't do anymore, but any business that I now get in is for growing my team, so that's kind of where I'm at.  It's honestly down to the academy, because it's given me the structure to follow, which then gives me the confidence to follow it through. Once you know that it works, you're happy to follow that process and to chase it. What I love about the academy, Cerys, is that you are very hands on. Cerys has not paid me to say this, but I am really pleasantly surprised at how you've got time for every single person, and it's the detail that you'll go into.  You've probably asked the same question 100 times over but you don't act as if you've been asked it.  No question is too silly, so you don’t ever feel judged.
