Last night in Melbourne a group of fantastic female finance leaders came together to enjoy delicious food and share enriching conversations. Probably one of the most interesting topics around here: how do family offices/business manage to achieve sustainable growth through professionalizing its leadership and organization. As leadership consultants and headhunters, what challenges have we encountered the most? The most difficult part I think it's balancing emotional family dynamics with professional management practices - many times intertwining them results in a big no-no. This can easily translate intro a Game of Thrones scenario in which business owners simply refuse to bring aboard professional leadership as they naturally will try to retain power and direction-setting capabilities within the organization. Succession planning is the next hot potato, as generational differences in vision and leadership styles may clash. A board succession plan is a company’s strategy that outlines the actions required for replacing a board member or an executive director typically when their terms are up and identifying successors for these leadership roles. It will also cover the replacement of the chair, committee chairs and members, and the CEO. Succession planning should not be left to chance.  If a board does not provide enough focus on this plan, it will probably recruit on an ad hoc basis rather than a strategic one, and ultimately, the organisation will go downhill as a result. You find out a lot about a business by the way they treat their staff on the way out. I spoke to a client who reflected on her exit from an employer she had given years of loyal service to. The message was clear: You won't find a better place to work for. Don't expect to be welcomed back when you leave. Fair to say this CFO never did return, though she did have a return stint with another, more values-led organisation. Her leadership style and behaviours are modelled on the latter.
