Stay in your lane. I was told this in one of my first roles as a lawyer. I was apparently too junior to bring in a client... As lawyers we are told: "get your head down and just do the work" and then all of a sudden one day you're asked why you don't have a book of business and you therefore aren't going to make Partner. Entrepreneurialism is something every job description seems to call for, but nobody really wants. It's all nonsense, and noone can seem to make their minds up. At least that's how it seems. I have come across many, many law firms that truly value this trait in people. They encourage lawyers from their first year to be in charge of their own careers, cultivating relationships and building business. Some firms can actually see that if their lawyers are spreading the good word, then they will do well. If you find yourself being told "stay in your lane" or some variation of this, it means you're not in the right firm. There are firms out there that will genuinely nurture your entrepreneurial spirit, and there are others that will dampen it. Make sure you're in the right firm!
