This Mental Health Awareness Month, I'm reflecting on the vital link between mental and respiratory health. Stress, anxiety, and depression can significantly impact how patients and caregivers cope with respiratory conditions. As healthcare providers, we confront these mental challenges daily. Many Respiratory Therapists share feelings of anxiety and the weight of our patients' issues. It's crucial for caregivers to pause, practice self-care, and focus on breathing techniques to reduce stress, enhance focus, manage pain, and boost immune function. One effective breathing exercise I recommend is Box Breathing or Sama Vritti Pranayama. This technique not only promotes relaxation but also reestablishes the mind-body connection.
