As our planet grows warmer, the responsibility to design for shade becomes increasingly critical. At CannonDesign, we believe building owners, civic leaders and designers must collaborate to increase shade cover through creative approaches. Projects like our Kirkland Ranch Academy of Innovation, designed in partnership with Hepner Architects, is just north of Tampa, Florida. The project employs a minimum 2:1 ratio for shading full glazed walls. All other windows are covered with a perforated metal panel to provide shading and safety to the exterior. Simple things add! We can provide comfort, energy savings, and quality of life. These shaded spaces aren’t just performing - they become social centers, places to get away, or meet with friends. Discover how we can work together to create cooler, more comfortable environments for our communities: https://lnkd.in/gtf67FhR

Have you ever wondered why Miami has some of the most iconic architecture in America? Would it surprise you that one firm in particular is behind a lot of it? Some 200 projects by the architecture firm Arquitectonica—over a third of its portfolio—are located in Miami-Dade County or nearby. 14 of Miami’s 50 tallest buildings also are among the firm’s designs. It seems the architects at this one firm have been defining the image of this world famous city for 4 decades. Since the firm’s founding in 1977, Arquitectonica has designed the federal courthouse, Dolphins stadium, Heat arena, two cruise terminals, a convention center, a handful of museums and even the city’s port tunnel entrance. Fourteen of Miami’s 50 tallest buildings are the firm’s projects. Arquitectonica is not just located in Miami; the architects have been defining the image of that city for over four decades. The firm’s structures are foundational to any conception of Miami in the 1980s #miami #wallstreetsouth #realestate

This is why preserving a Home, is Honoring Its Story 🏡✨ In a recent conversation with principal architect Carina Coel, we explored the delicate balance between honoring the past and creating for the future. As part of a project with Restructure Studio, we discussed how preserving the existing home wasn’t just about maintaining its structure—it was about preserving its soul. Carina shared insightful thoughts on how she was able to expand this home in a way that felt like a natural evolution rather than an interruption. By carefully considering the design, materials, and form, she ensured that the new additions seamlessly blended with the original architecture, making it seem as though they had always been part of the home. This approach emphasizes the importance of thoughtful, sensitive design—one that celebrates the history of a space while adapting to modern needs. 🌿 Key takeaways: - Preservation isn’t just about keeping the old—it’s about making the old and new coexist harmoniously. -Thoughtful expansion can allow a home to grow and evolve while still feeling rooted in its history. -Architecture isn’t just about the physical structure—it’s about maintaining the stories, memories, and experiences tied to that space. Thank you Carina for sharing your expertise with me. Special thanks to my husband Gustavo Bernal from Gus Bernal: Film+Photo+Education for capturing this conversation. #Architecture #Design #Preservation #SustainableDesign #HomeExpansion #RestructureStudio #ArchitecturalDesign #womeinarchitecture #BuildingHistory #preservationaustin Preservation Austin Alex McVey
