What is the hydraulic force to launch a plane from the deck of an aircraft carrier? Steam catapults on aircraft carriers exert tremendous force to launch planes in a very short distance. The catapult system accelerates aircraft from 0 to 165 knots (about 190 mph) in less than 2.5 seconds over a distance of only about 300 feet. The exact force varies depending on the aircraft's weight and required takeoff speed, but it is substantial. The catapult uses high-pressure steam stored in large accumulator tanks below deck. When launched, this pressurized steam rapidly expands to drive two large pistons connected to a shuttle that pulls the aircraft along the deck. During launch, pilots experience about 4 G's of acceleration force. For context, this is significantly more force than experienced during high-speed aerial maneuvers. The steam pressure and catapult settings are adjusted for each specific aircraft based on its weight and required launch speed. This ensures each plane receives the optimal force needed for safe takeoff from the short carrier deck.
