NEW: Why this is not about “safe spaces” Sir Keir Starmer keeps talking about “safe” spaces instead of “single-sex” spaces. The Equality Act provides for “single and separate sex services”, which encompass everything from toilets, changing rooms and showers to sex-specific healthcare clinics, support groups for women and men and women’s refuges. These provisions allow services to be provided on the basis of sex: divided between “male” and “female”, not between “safe” and “unsafe”. Talking about “safe spaces” for women does not reflect the Equality Act and gives the impression of something else altogether – rare, specialist spaces, for women at their most vulnerable, not the everyday spaces that women rely on for privacy, dignity and inclusion. It is important to be clear that what are needed are single-sex services. Politicians who want to reassure women that they are taking seriously the questions about protecting their rights and making the Equality Act clear should talk about single-sex services. We know we’re failing women when 90% of young women say they see sexual violence as “inevitable”, and pretty much all women have either experienced sexual violence themselves, or know a woman who has. The same survey from Young Women’s Alliance found that the majority of young men agree that “sex is about power” - which is not something young women agreed with. Young men also shared that they want to find ways to feel better about themselves and their role in society, which they believe will improve their views and behaviours towards women. This highlights some very concerning attitudes about sex and power amongst young people. #youngpeople #believesurvivors #explainer #research #endviolence

Consent is not a thing today for a few men.- Aditi Shroff This statement highlights the ongoing struggle many women face when it comes to their safety and respect in society. Here are some key takeaways from recent discussions on this pressing issue: 1. Social Media Awareness: Platforms can amplify abuse survivors' voices. 2. Sex Education: Essential to promote understanding of consent and boundaries. 3. Victim-Blaming: Women should not be blamed for their abuse. 4. Accountability: Perpetrators, not victims, should face consequences. 5. Safety Concerns: Many women do not feel safe in public spaces. 6. Harassment: Public spaces remain a hotspot for inappropriate behavior. 7. Cultural Norms: Need to challenge harmful beliefs surrounding abuse. 8. Systemic Change: Legal and social support for women must improve. Let’s come together to challenge these harmful norms and create a safer, more inclusive world for everyone. Special thanks to Shubh Agarwal and Disha Khandelwal for their thoughtful conversation and to Aditi Shroff for her valuable insights, which added depth to this discussion. I've learned so much from my friends Brad Johnson and David Smith on the important role men can have in stepping up as allies to women to help combat sexism in the workplace. While 86% of men express their desire to interrupt sexist behaviors, only 31% feel confident doing so. The Forbes article below highlights this: that men who address sexism are often viewed more positively. Men, your support makes a difference! We need your help so that together we can build a more positive environment for everyone. https://lnkd.in/eyaE5pt8 #diversityandinclusion #inclusiveworkforce #inclusiveleadership
