***Sunday Speculations*** Lately, I've been thinking about the rise of value brands in cannabis. In California, Glass House Brands Inc. is succeeding with Allswell, which offers 1/8ths for $10 out the door. Ascend Wellness Holdings (CSE: AAWH.U / OTCQX:AAWH) is seeing similar success with Simply Herb in IL, MA, MI, and OH. While I initially thought this was mainly due to consumer wallet pressure--everything BUT cannabis is getting more expensive--it may just be how the industry plays out. With wine, 75% of wine sold is under $10 per bottle. That's what most everyday consumers buy. Only 7% of bottles sold are over $21. With weed, most (sadly) are just looking for the most THC per dollar. Multiple MSOs chased the premium market and eventually pivoted to a "good, better, best" approach. In the end, premium may be what I want, but investors may consider offerings that either span multiple price points or focus on where the bulk of the dollars are spent--and that's in the value market. You can succeed with premium; it's just a smaller market, and your stuff has to actually be really good.
