Medicine - Miracle or Menace? We have all needed and benefited from medication at some point. Good, reliable, proven medications save lives. They can, unfortunately, also cause menacing, long-lasting effects in older adults. I’ve experienced the impact medications can have on the dementia mind first hand and it has been, quite frankly, mind-blowing. I’ve watched my Mom – on several occasions -- go from being one of the sweetest people I know to becoming a stranger who was aggressive, paranoid, delusional, and suffering from hallucinations. It’s one of those neglected questions with answers right in front of our noses. We just refuse to look. [Scientific American and Kaiser Health News] Getting high—and overdosing—is after all, as American as apple pie. Over 46 million people in the U.S. have an alcohol- or drug-use disorder. Everyone knows someone who died, or who lost a son or daughter, mother or father, to a drug overdose, one of the 100,000-plus now yearly recorded nationwide. Lost in today’s raging debate over drug policy and how to curb this spiraling mortality is the deep malaise that lies at the root of substance use in America. We are stuck on a loop, veering from “drug war” to legalization to backlash against legalization, without a record of improving lives and setting people on a successful path of recovery. Many drug overdose deaths are preventable. In recent years, however, drug overdoses have claimed more US lives than ever before. New resources from the Network for Public Health Law and ChangeLab Solutions can help state and local decision makers take powerful action to save lives and reduce harm in their communities by considering policy strategies to mitigate risks of overdose and prioritize care over punishment for people who use drugs. Preventing Overdose and Reducing Drug-Related Harm: A Policy Guide for State and Local Change, developed by ChangeLab Solutions, presents 11 evidence-based policy strategies that were selected for their potential to save lives, advance health equity, and be feasibly implemented at state, local, and institutional levels. Implementing State and Local Overdose Prevention Policies: A Resource for Navigating the Policy Process, created by ChangeLab Solutions and the Network for Public Health Law (led by Corey S. Davis, J.D., and Amy Judd Lieberman, J.D.), offers guidance to help ensure that overdose prevention policies are equitably developed and implemented so that they respond effectively to community needs. The Opioid Crisis: In 2021, nearly 1 out of 47 deaths in Missouri involved opioids. Naloxone is a medicine used in emergencies to help people who have taken too much of an opioid drug. It can save lives. The Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services (DHSS) made a rule for the whole state so that more people can get Naloxone to save lives.
