I am considering going my own way again. The day the iPad came out, I started working on touch-screen based synthesizers for professional use; an actually expressive instrument that is as unapologetically hard to play as a real one. Months later: Gorillaz, The Flying Eyes, Dream Theater, others were using my instruments on studio albums; and on stage. I was told that I had fans inside of Apple. I teamed up with Dream Theater's keyboardist for a version of this app. A cross between an oud, an electric guitar, and a distorted synthesizer. But I only made perhaps $50k for the entirety of the time I was working on it. But it created amazing side-effects on my future; and had landed me my next job. Swift did not exist back then, and I was strictly sticking to OpenGLES, and the native finger-tracking and audio; not the kind of chops you need to make iOS apps for companies. One day, I found myself on a call with the guy that writes the Moog firmware; and realized that I was deeply out of my depth in terms of signal processing chops, and crawled back to my day job at Check Point. But I learned a lot about how to make a real-time device, where milliseconds of latency and millimeter finger tracking accuracy were critical. https://lnkd.in/eEmuB_5g
