I cannot possibly express how many times I’ve said the phrase “if everything is a priority then nothing is a priority.” This is a disease that has infected the Department of Defense as a whole. Every single command I’ve been a part of has manning and task saturation problems. There has to be a solution but it’s above my pay grade for sure. So, as a result, we as leaders must determine which items to prioritize so that that stress level doesn’t reach the enlisted members of the organization. Every task having a universal level of priority and perceived stress are morale and efficiency killers. They will destroy your credibility and leadership structure. So create your own priority list. You must. Will you as a leader get chewed out for “under-prioritizing” something? Probably. But is it worth it to keep morale higher and improve efficiency? Absolutely.
