Air Astana: How Central Asia’s largest airline is looking abroad for growth Kazakhstan barely figured on the global aviation map back in 2006 when Sir Richard Evans, then Chairman of British aerospace and defense group BAE Systems, offered Peter Foster the top job at the newly established Air Astana. Foster, who had previously held senior executive roles at Cathay Pacific, Philippine Airlines and Royal Brunei Airlines, accepted the challenge to take the new fledgling national carrier and turn it into the largest airline in Central Asia.  AeroTime traveled to Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city and Air Astana’s main hub, for an extended conversation with Foster and to learn more about Air Astana’s current and future projects. “This region is a massive growth market. At the end of April, the New Trends in Civil Aviation 2024 (NTCA) conference was held in Prague ✈️. This was already the 24th year of a series of conferences organised by the Department of Air Transport of Fakulta dopravní ČVUT v Praze 🎓.   The objective of these conferences is to provide a platform where members of communities interested in air transport operations and applications are able to interact. The conferences are designed for both specialists from practice and academics and serve as a forum for exchange of opinions and experience regarding technology, methodology, applications, and case studies as well as real cases in both civil and military aviation. The new route will operate four times weekly beginning April 2, 2025, using the airline's flagship Dreamliner aircraft. According to Mark Galardo, Executive Vice President, Revenue and Network Planning, and President, Cargo at Air Canada, It will be Air Canada's 12th route in its transpacific network from Vancouver, which includes Japan, South Korea, People's Republic of China, Hong Kong SAR, Thailand, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand, leveraging Vancouver's geographic position as the closest major North American city to Asia. The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is in talks with an unnamed country through which it aims to secure funding to purchase more than ten aircraft for its national carrier, Congo Airways, including new Airbus Aircraft widebodies and narrowbodies and Embraer regional jets, acting CEO Norbert SENGAMALI told ch-aviation at the recent African Airlines Association (AFRAA) annual general assembly in Cairo. Austro Control Managing Director Philipp Piber on behalf of the COOPANS Alliance has taken over as Chair of A6 Alliance from Magdalena Jaworska-Maćkowiak, President of PANSA, the Polish Air Navigation Service Provider with the beginning of 2025. The handover was made official at a meeting on January 9, 2025, at Austro Control Headquarters in Vienna. “It is my distinct honour to take over as Chair of the A6 Alliance in 2025. Together, we will continue our efforts towards modernising European Air Traffic Management and successfully realising the Digital European Sky. We want to further strengthen the A6-Alliance in its role as a key partner for European aviation”, said Austro Control Managing Director Philipp Piber. “The chairmanship of the A6 is an honourable mission, but one that requires a great deal of effort.
