$50 billion - that's the contribution by people with disabilities to Alberta's economy! It was just one of many notable stats from a report by YourAlberta (Government of Alberta) released recently. There are resources here in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo for employers and employees to help reduce barriers to employment. We work with the RMWB Labour Connect Committee, and we're sharing resources from some of the members in a new blog post. Check it out: https://buff.ly/4ipR4QP

Have a Happy Labour Day 😊 Honorable. David Piccini - Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development in Ontario. We need to protect jobs of Ontarians and Canadian workers by cancelling the temporary foreign workers program in Ontario and ban 100 % of temporary foreign workers and international students from working in Ontario in the current time. Unfortunately, many Ontarians cannot find jobs in the current time due to Hundreds of Thousands of temporary foreign workers and international students working in Ontario since 2015 when Trudeau came to power. For example, if any company in Ontario holds a job fair, hundreds of international students will gather in large lines to apply for positions advertised as they don't give any chance for Unemployed Ontarians & Canadians to get jobs 😡👿. We really need to do strong and effective actions to protect jobs of Ontarians & Canadians and focus strongly on providing skilled trades training and on the job training programs for the local Youth of Ontario and Unemployed Ontarians & Canadians.
Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development | MPP for Northumberland Peterborough South
From Timmins’ wall of miners to my own family’s story, labour has shaped Ontario’s history and future. We stand on the shoulders of those who fought for workers' rights, and we continue to build a better province for all.

The Learning and Work Institute's analysis of the Labour Market statistics in August focussed on economically inactive people, which we know is a major issue for social housing community support. 📢 Only one in ten out-of-work older people and people with a disability get employment support each year. 🚨 When we see reports about people who are economically inactive we hear alarm bells. We look at numbers and percentages of those who have fallen out of the system of employment. We want to sit up and also look urgently at those people who are also *at risk* of becoming economically inactive - but we don’t always talk about early intervention here. We can’t be passive. We see constant changes in labour market and economy: - like Tata & Port Talbot, like Grangemouth - high street closures like Carpetright and Ted Baker - manufacturing losses like Dyson - and incoming warnings about AI job losses in the big banking and consultancy sectors. We know that the words Job Losses and Closures sit over the heads of REAL PEOPLE who have developed skills through their working life. We also see the headlines - but we can forget about the supply chains to these big players. We need to sit up and think about supporting people to be active in their skills and development and ultimately employability. Change like this is hard and horrible, and losing confidence and employment is heart breaking too. If we have employed people we should also make sure they are employable and able to see their next step.

Why It Matters:
It's incredible to see Maine taking the lead and setting a great example for the entire nation. Thank you to Luke's Lobster for their intentional efforts! This is particularly thrilling, especially given my involvement in enhancing employment outcomes for internationally trained talent through the Greater Portland Workforce Initiative!

Today, as we observe Cesar Chavez Day, my thoughts turn to the Francis Scott Key Bridge Tragedy and the sobering reality of the dangers faced by indigenous migrant communities. Not only do they confront perilous work conditions daily, but they are also faced with negative political narratives that breed hatred and violence. And as a reminder: - You trust them to build your homes. - You trust them to build/maintain your roads and bridges. - You trust them with your children. - You trust them with your food supply chain. - You trust them to harvest your food. - You trust them to cook your food. We rely on their labor, yet too often turn a blind eye to the injustices they endure – unsafe working conditions, unfair wages, and exploitative practices. Our indigenous migrant communities deserve more than mere trust; they deserve human rights, worker rights, and the acknowledgment of their invaluable contributions. I am hopeful for a future where their labor is not only recognized but respected, and where justice and dignity prevail for all. As we pay homage to Chavez's legacy of championing human and worker rights, let's remember the debt of dignity owed to those whose unwavering contributions uphold the fabric of our society and economy. #CesarChavezDay #HumanRights #WorkerRights #DignityForAll #MiGente #MigrantWorkers
