🏠 Homelessness in the UK: A Hidden Crisis 🏠 Did you know that over 274,000 people, including 126,000 children, are homeless in England? This statistic is staggering in a country with the world’s sixth-largest economy. Homelessness isn’t just rough sleeping—it includes those in temporary shelters, insecure housing, or living in inadequate conditions. On October 4th, Future Men is sleeping out to raise awareness and funds for Glass Door. Let’s bring this crisis out of the shadows and into the light. 🌟 https://lnkd.in/e5RUGTRP

Addressing the housing continuum in Charlotte-Mecklenburg starts with awareness. “The number of people experiencing homelessness in Charlotte-Mecklenburg continues to increase. As of June 2023, there were 2,704 people in Mecklenburg County actively experiencing homelessness, an 11% increase (from 2,428 people) from June 2022.” Mecklenburg County - Housing & Homelessness Dashboard Crisis Assistance Ministry is among a few organizations in Mecklenburg County minimizing housing instability by addressing "upstream" needs like eviction prevention. World Homeless Day: A Chance to Make a Difference 🏠✨ On this #WorldHomelessDay, I'm reflecting on how we can better support individuals without stable housing. Homelessness is an issue that affects communities across the globe, including right here in the UK. According to Shelter, over 250,000 people are homeless in England alone. This is a stark reminder that our efforts to combat homelessness are far from over. It's essential to remember that everyone has a role to play. Whether it's volunteering your time, donating to local shelters, or simply raising awareness about the challenges faced by homeless individuals, every action counts. From my own experiences, I've seen how community support can significantly impact lives and help people regain stability. Let's use today as a catalyst for positive change. I encourage you all to engage in conversations, share your thoughts, and take steps towards making a difference. Together, we can contribute to ending homelessness and building a more inclusive society. #HomelessnessAwareness #WorldHomelessDay #CommunitySupport #vetrorecruitment #vetro

#Homelessness is a big topic of conversation in the greater Seattle area—and one that can be loaded with opinion and emotion. If you—like us here at Campion—believe that we need honest and empathetic conversation about #housing and homelessness, then we encourage you “donate your small talk” this holiday season. Donate Your Small Talk offers a way to educate and inspire empathy with friends/family/coworkers who are frustrated and sharing their frustration with you. This new campaign from We Are In will help you talk about homelessness in a clear, compassionate, and sensible way. For example: Your Uncle: All those homeless people downtown are why Seattle’s crime rates are so bad. It’s not safe there anymore. You: I hear your about safety. It’s a big concern for me, too. People who are homeless, though, are more likely to be the targets of crime, rather than the perpetrators. Crime is a real problem, but people experiencing homelessness is a separate issue. Homelessness is a serious challenge. We need to talk about it. Please repost to donate *your* small talk and tag three friends to help spread the word! Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/gR6jdCBR

Tonight is no ordinary night 💫 And I'm asking for your support. At 6pm, roughly 1,000 people will gather at the mighty MCG. Not for a game, but for a cause. That cause is youth homelessness. And those 1,000 people will SLEEP under the iconic lights in support of the growing number of young people without a safe place to call home. The need has never been more urgent. Every night, over 7,600 young Victorians aged 12-24 experience homelessness. But you wouldn't even know it. That's because couch surfing is the most common form of homelessness experienced by young people. It happens behind closed doors, so you don't see it. This keeps youth homelessness invisible. Melbourne City Mission (MCM) is on the frontline of this crisis, helping young people break the cycle of homelessness -- once and for all. That's why tonight is so important. With the funds raised from Sleep At The 'G, MCM will build safe, supportive homes especially for young people with healing-oriented care and support. And the more we raise, the more they can build. So far, they've raised almost $600,000. But I think we can get to $1M. So if you can, please donate to this worthy cause 👉 https://bit.ly/3ymy03A Together, we can help break the cycle. We have the power to end youth homelessness. #MCMSleepAtTheG #YouthHomelessness #ThePowerOfCommunity #MelbourneCityMission

📢Government figures released today by the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities showed fewer people were sleeping rough in Coventry and Warwickshire last year – a decrease of 4% from 2022. 📉The drop – from 37 to 34 people – may be thanks to recent hard work by local authorities and homelessness organisations, but it is likely that hidden homelessness persists. Today’s figures show what can be achieved when financial resources are made available, and local authorities and homelessness charities pull together. However, this isn’t a moment to sit back and celebrate. Homelessness is still all around us and so much of it is hidden. With the continuing cost-of-living crisis, many people are living in insecure or unsuitable places, crashing on sofas, or doing whatever they can to stay sheltered through the winter. These people would not have been included in the numbers because they aren’t visibly sleeping out in the open. ➡️https://lnkd.in/ed27dKEy
Rough sleeping figures are just the tip of the iceberg

I spoke with @95bFM last week about our campaign calling on Government to implement Duty to Assist legislation that would support us to end and prevent homelessness. Basically, if you and your family are experiencing homelessness, there is no clear responsibility on the state to provide you with support. This means, you can turn up to WINZ, ask for help, and there is a real possibility that you and your whānau could be turned away to sleep on the street. Duty to Assist legislation would ensure that there was a clear responsibility placed upon Government agencies to provide you with the support you need, not just to access shelter, but to gain access to permanent accommodation. Homelessness will not be ended by funding homelessness services. The mahi we do is important, but without structural change, will not end homelessness. Homelessness is not an individual issue, it's systemic, and it's structural. If we want to end homelessness we must address the structural realities that allow it to continue. Duty to Assist legislation is one piece of the puzzle that will support us to move past managing homelessness, to ending it once and for all.
